First Impressions Well, I decided to go down to the Atlanta space, and they happened to have one for viewing, and one for driving…so I booked a demo last minute. They accepted…and immediately when sitting in it, I don’t know what they did, but for the drivers seat, it has a bit more room…I am 6’3 so having lots of room helps. The frunk is definitely smaller, but not much smaller. Still bigger than many frunks. Door is lighter, I prefer the heavier feel of the gen 1. The new light bar looks excellent, and I noticed the quality of the interior felt put together better. The new UI is amazing, and the camera quality is insane, and loving the camera turn signals.

Regen Braking:
This is so much smoother, and efficient. Much more easy to modulate, and won’t give a whiplash, while still being strong…and the low setting is almost like coasting. No more high regen.

Quietness:
The example I drove was a dual standard with 22inch sport rims. It was like a library in there compared to the gen one. Extremely quiet in regards to wind noise, and you can tell the different above 70 also…and the air compressor wasn’t loud either….in this heat wave of 95 degrees. AC was great, and I did not hear the motors at all except for flooring it.

Ride Quality: This was the determining factor for me. Going over the huge potholes and rough roads of downtown Atlanta WITH 22 inchers, I was taken back of how smooth it was. It didn’t feel anywhere as harsh or anything as the gen 1. The firm setting is like soft in the old one, but even more controlled. Excellent ride quality over smooth pavement, and the dampening control is excellent, very smooth ride…now matches the price tag. Easily comparable to my MDX Type S and X7 in terms of air suspension ride quality. Great improvements.

Acceleration:
I don’t know if they changed the throttle mapping with the dual, but it’s so much smoother with power delivery than it already was, and seems to have more response and torque even though the numbers didn’t change. It had a wow factor…I didn’t feel like I was missing out much from the performance upgrade much less the quad..and yes, top speed is 130. Don’t ask…

Handing and Final Impressions:

To me, it handles much more predictably and less jittery and unsettling when you really push it. Handles like a dream…that said…Gen 1 handles amazing also. Overall, it’s an evolution and improvement of an already great product. I’ll be placing my order tonight. Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for sharing! I'm happy to see Rivian making progress. To me, some of the roughness was what turned me on about it. Reminded me of older jeeps. It's an adventure vehicle after all. It sounds like Rivian has smoothed some of the rough edges and I like that though.

So the dual standard goes 130mph and the original quad and performance models go 112mph, lol. Wow just wow. I guess all those early demos years ago were for the Gen 2

No more high regen.
This makes me very sad. I'm on the verge of ordering a gen 2. My buddy has a gen 1 and the high Regen setting is one of my favorite things about the driving Dynamics

:(

Would you say that the regen is now less strong than it was before? Or does it just come on more gradually?

I've also heard conflicting reports on this. I'm wondering if high is now reserved for sport mode or something? Or maybe only on tri/quad?

Comes on more gradually, but stronger…it’s between the old standard and the old high…..that’s what the new “standard” regen is now.

Oh ok well that's great news then! Seems like there's just not a whole lot to complain about with the new gen.

In what dimension would you say the frunk is smaller? Width, height, depth? I 100% don't care about this one. Just curious more than anything haha

Depth. Width seems to be the same.

I suspect they realize the mass market never goes off road or even sporty type driving. They got all of us already. Time to expand hard into comfortable cruisers to get to where the real significant sales are. But also not give up anything in those performance areas at the same time. Seems they did a great evolutionary revision with the G2 in particular with the R1S suspension modifications.

Agreed on all your points. Thanks for sharing. I thought I remember only seeing 2 regens settings and your picture confirms no more high regen on the dual motor.

Here is the Tri-Motor screenshot.

Thanks.

Very interesting....I wonder why the G2 DM lost the high regen?

Probably because most of the time the front motor is being used. Could be excessive wear and tear since the rear is uncoupled unless needed? Just a thought.

The more that I'm thinking about it, the more I'm wondering if it's to do with the lfp battery more so than the motors. The trimotor has the same front, and it is primarily front wheel drive unless needed. So I'm thinking either a battery related issue, or just an arbitrary software lock because the new "standard" is stronger than before, and maybe they want to reserve high for some more sporty situations

All unfounded speculation of course.

I think some of these questions will be answered once we start seeing dual large/max. As well as dual performance

That is a solid possibility. Maybe by eliminating the high regen they are able to eliminate clutching back in the rear motor. Thus the comments that it is much smoother, etc...

I have not ever experienced anything negative in anyway with the QM regen set on high, so I am thinking all this is DM exclusive largely?

I stick with Standard or drive in Snow mode with Low regen because my quad is pretty tocky in High. Glad to hear Gen 2 is smoother.
