Did RJ just say we get access to the Tesla network at the end of this month on the R2 reveal?

The Ford rollout has been a disaster? The adapter is free. Free!

Is it a disaster people have to wait 6 months for their free stuff? Not IMO. I can go buy an aftermarket adapter and start charging on the SCs instead of waiting for my handout if I want. Mine is supposed to be delivered in April, and I think I can wait. If I didn't want to wait, I would order one from A2Z.
No you can’t. There is no 3rd party adapter currently available and Rivian has clearly stated that the one they will provide is the only one authorized to use…so find and use another one at your own risk…

I honestly don’t think the adapters should be free. No one is forcing you to use the Tesla network. If you wish to use it you should buy your own adapter.
Rivian is already spending so much money, giving away free adapters that cost so much is not the way to go about it IMO. Everyone in society now just wants to be catered to and babied. Everyone gets a trophy and nobody gets left behind mentality.

There is a 3rd party DC charging adapter available (A2Z). You however can't use it yet on a Rivian. Yes, Rivian and Tesla, will say you have to use an approved one as they don't want to be liable for 3rd party products and their experience.

It's unreasonable for a company to reward their first wave of customers buying $80,000+ vehicles? IMO the PR alone from them giving out adapters for free is going to make it worth it. 57k vehicles sold last year multiplied by what, $80 per adapter at cost? That's only $5M, or about the same cost as a 30 second Superbowl commercial.

it’s unreasonable for US OWNERS to expect it for free. If you can buy an 80k truck you can pay $200 for an adapter. Why should they have to pay it? You talk like $5million is nothing. Plus did you account for storage, distribution, shipping, labor to get said free adapters out?

They're not doing any of the storage, distribution, shipping, or labor. They're outsourcing this, as all OEs are (it's the same adapter)

SC access requires an OTA software update first. My suspicion is that 2024.07.01 (which is under testing right now by beta testers) is the release. The advertised features for the release do NOT include SC access - but of course they would not reveal this ahead of time, so I suspect it will be revealed only when the OTA goes live. Only at that point would they start sending out adapters.

i have to agree with you. Rivian is obviously in a cash flow crunch, and $5M still pays some bills, or a whole bunch of technicians' annual salary. I would honestly rather see them use it for that than giving away free adapters. No one would have complained at all if Rivian did not offer them for free. This was a totally unexpected move by Tesla.

I really hope Rivian does waves of invites based on delivery date so earlier deliveries get their adapters first (and I'm saying this as a late 2023 delivery). There's nothing as annoying as being on the back of the line because they happened to open the order portal while you were randomly on a long bike ride, in the Antarctic, or getting open heart surgery.
I'll take one for the team and volunteer to be at the END of the delivery list!

99.9% of my charging is done at either my primary home or vacation home and there is a RAN halfway. In my area, 3rd party chargers are much more prevalent that Tesla SuperChargers. I'm not really sure I would even use the adapter in the next year.

I would be willing to buy the NACS adapter, but I understand that only the one provided by Rivian will work. I guess that makes it the free one or nothing.

I am also wonder if these adapters will also work level 2 NACS chargers.

They’ve said no and that wouldn’t make any sense financially…
Oh OK. Bummer, I would have probably paid for it and I would actually also not mind paying for the adapter.
But anyway, with the front left charging port location on the vehicle, I assume that the Tesla Network charing experience will always be a bit annoying

Those who are waiting six months placed their orders after 50,000 others had already placed their orders. You really think 50,000+ adapters should be available in less than six months? Maybe. I guess the alternative was delaying the announcement until they had 100,000 adapters in the warehouse. I am glad they didn't do it that way.

I wonder how this will impact Rivian? If they are coming from the same source, it may be a long wait. I would head over to A2Z and order one if that happens.
I would expect to have 100k simple adapters by now. It’s been almost 9 months since the announcement was made. They could have started making adapters shortly after the announcement.

The adapters won’t work with L2 chargers. And technically you can buy a 3rd party adapter and it will work. But if something goes wrong it’s on you. Rivian or Tesla won’t help.
