Jennifer Prenner, a former marketing leader at Amazon and Meta, joined EV giant Rivian as its new vice president of marketing and CMO.

Prenner, based in Seattle, most recently was a vice president at Meta working with its Reality Labs business before taking a year-long sabbatical. She was previously head of marketing for Fire TV at Amazon, and spent more than eight years at Verizon.

“I’m so excited by the mission, the opportunity ahead and all of the amazing people I’ve already met,” Prenner said in a LinkedIn post.

Founded in 2009 and based in Irvine, Calif., Rivian raised billions in private funding from companies such as Amazon and Ford before going public in 2021. The company produced57,232 vehicles in 2023.

Rivian opened a new showroom in Seattle last year. The company reports fourth quarter earnings next week.

Seems like a good choice. Poor Tony stays at his job with no advancement.

I hope she stays longer at this job than she did at the last ones.

This is why I am bullish on Rivian as an investor (and s-0——0-n to be owner). I am in high tech leadership and I know these candidates have lots of options. They must see something in Rivian that gives them confidence to join the company.

That really reduces my concerns about the viability of Rivian, so I am less worried about the day-to-day stock moves. As a long term investment, I think Rivian shows a lot of promise.

It's probably the number of 0's on the paycheck.

Maybe I'm being too cynical but Rivian has $10+bn of cash so RJ is probably paying them very well (in a difficult tech hiring environment) to lure them away from places like Apple, Meta, etc.

Isn't Tony Customer Engagement?
Which is related to marketing and previously the communication VP role that someone else took. Tony is stuck in his role and we don’t hear from him anymore either.

I wonder if Rivian goes the Lucid route and starts advertising a lot.

I know that was a badge of honor for Tesla, but even they do various campaigns now including email marketing which Rivian already does.

Gotta get the word out!

I think marketing is a smart play, and not something to be avoided.

That said, the best marketing is referrals from owners, and I hope Rivian introduces a formal referral program soon

More cash gives everyone confidence. The snowflake needed a year long sabbatical.

I think Rivian has done excellent marketing already with a limited budget. It’s not the TV adds or pay per click stuff.

The collaboration with MotorTrend on the Trans America Trail was a big one. So is their sponsorship of things like the Rebelle Rally. I’d say Rivian’s style of subtle marketing is harder to pull off, but they’ve done an excellent job of it.

They had the early videos of the camp kitchen and tank turn as well. Just because it’s subtle doesn’t mean it isn’t marketing. I hope they can keep it up.

I agree with this completely. It is a complicated strategy but seems very effective. I don't think marketing has been a weak spot in anyway, so hopefully they don't see it as one and make major changes.
