Rivian R1T 2022
Hi everyone,

I own my R1T since August 2022 and drove it for a little over 25,000 miles. Today I picked up my car from the Service Center after they did realignment on my wheels (it caused significant steering wheel vibration over 60 mph on highway). To my surprise I was told that they found out some issues around the battery and it will have to be replaced. Given the lead time for them to order the battery and later keep the truck at the Service Center for around a week to swap the battery, I took my truck to drive it for another two weeks.

Seems a little odd to me, I did not have any issues or errors linked to the battery. At the end, I am glad to get a new battery pack, hopefully it will prolong a little more the battery life for my car.

Anyone had a similar experience recently ?

I will post further updates once I get closer to my service date.

Sorry for the trouble. But did you say they let you take it and drive it even though they are replacing the battery pack? That would be a little disconcerting.

Correct.

Although I did vocalize my requirement to have a truck to use next week, something matching R1T as I need to take my gear. I have also asked if there's possibility, this issue may cause the vehicle to "catch fire" and they calmed me down, that it is not that serisous.

Apparently the technicians, after running the verification on the vehicle, noticed some data that concerned them and recommended replacing the battery soon.

Agreed, that the information may be spaced, but let's see what I will get in the final report.

I haven't heard of this on a Rivian, mine is rapidly approaching 25k tho. Taycans currently have a recall to check the battery for leaks(air leaks) and if it fails it doesn't get re-sealed it gets replaced. It could be something like that, you'd never notice it as a customer unless it stayed submerged in water for a long period of time.

People have posted on these forums before about getting their HV battery replaced.

Of course, but I don't know about people having them replaced like OPs out of the blue and with no obvious issues though.

Good to know they are monitoring these things. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of motors and batteries on the 2022 trucks are replaced now that they have more data and have improved manufacturing of various parts. Not to always compare with Tesla, but it was similar with my 2014 Model S. Nothing failed, but early unexpected wear led to replacement of the drive unit and air suspension.

2022, 3XXX VIN. I had my HV battery replaced at around 13k miles. No explanation given, no symptoms of malfunction or hints of impending failure.

I'm my case Rivian diagnosed the issue based on telemetry and contacted me out of the blue. I was impressed that they were proactive.

Never heard anyone cite alignment as the cause for a shaky wheel. I'm more curious how they are not diagnosing that as wheel balancing issues (with unrelated alignment needs)

I wonder if they had a series of VINs they are watching due to possible manufacturer defects or something and if any of the data they can pull shows it being off they act quickly to swap it?

What is key is there is no risk and it is under warranty. Depending on how you look at it you are lucky as the battery will be brand new. Question is will they extend the warranty on the battery or not.

Reminds me of when my 2002 WRX had a clutch shutter issue and they replaced just before the warranty expired so I got a new clutch at around 30,000 miles. Since I bought the car without ever driving a manual I learned on the vehicle so it probably had a bit more wear than usual.

For me this is one of the things I really admire about Rivian, they will proactively replace a component if something doesn't seem right even at significant cost to them in the interest of the vehicles continued (hopefully) trouble free operation for the user.

My limited experience with other automakers, hasn't been this way.

The experience is definitely YMMV. Sometimes, you have to fuss a bit more but overall, Rivian tries to make it right.
