Most people here seem to be coming from a late-model Tesla MX, BMW X7, etc. It's funny to see the things that bother people about the R1, like driver assist features and missing software features. When you're coming from a 2002 vehicle everything about the R1 feels like magic!

Anyone else coming to their Rivian from a 20+ year-old car?
I'm coming from a 2012 X5 35d which feels 20+ years older than my R1S LOL

2009 Ram 1500, but I won't get 15 year out of the Rivian. Technology is changing too fast.
You may be surprised. I’m over 7 years with our Model S and it is still going strong, we have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon.

The feature adds via OTA updates has kept it feeling pretty current. People complain about lack of physical buttons on the Tesla and Rivian but over time I have come to understand the flexibility offers them for updates.

My R1S was supposed to replace a 2001 Land Cruiser with 300k miles. Ended up trading in the wife’s suburban and keeping the cruiser instead. Correctly assumed she would be driving the R1S more than me anyway. Love the difference in drives. It does make the Rivian feel amazing going from cruiser.

Very True. I guess what I'm trying to say is if I went from a 2009 ram 1500 ro a 2023 ram 1500 what's new? Android auto? 30 more HP? Modern styling?

If I go from a 2009 Nissan Leaf to a 2009 NIssan Ev6 (or other similar price point), the differences are huge. Relatively.

In 5-10 years I think you'll see V2V, V2L, 800V, 300kw charging, 400-500 mile range, quad/max, and a bunch of stuff fixed.

Maybe EVs have leveled off (or Teslas cost more with inflation back then)... but I also don't think longevity will be the same as a Toyota mainstream.. :)

Came from a 2011 VW GTI 6 speed and 2000 4Runner 5 speed. Gave the 4Runner to my daughter but we have to get rid of it, won't pass emissions anymore. It's a shame since it still runs well.

2000 Land Rover Disco II -> bicycle for a year while dry docked/deployed -> R1T. My buddy still has the Disco and I'm hoping to get it back when he transfers, make it the cabin rig! I miss it's short turn radius, but not 11 mpg at these fuel prices.

2004 Tacoma to 2022 R1T. The Taco served its purpose, but the R1T is on another planet and I love everything about it.

Oh... a transition year Legacy.. You get lucky and get the 2.2, or unlucky with the 2.5?

(sorry the gear head is coming out for a moment)

2.2 Bought it used with 30,000 miles in 1998. Now at 210,000+. The only time it's left me stranded is when some fine citizen in the east of the state put more than a gallon of water, gravel, mud, and grass in the gas tank. (Found a great shop in Pendleton as a result, however!)

I was going to be letting go of my 2006 GX470 but...nah. First of all, the R1S does not have a spare so I'm not going on any significant trails. Then even the idea of a recovery winch evaporated. And then there's the challenge of charging with longer trail runs. So I'm not really seeing the R1S as an offroad solution - for me.

I ended up keeping the GX, lifting with ARB/OME shocks, refreshing the air bags, adding new TRD wheels, and adding recovery points. I don't put a lot of miles on it but I do use it daily to take the dog to the dog park. This helps keep the R1S fresher which has a significant WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).

Do I win?? Coming from a 2001 Land Rover Discovery 2! Still runs great. Picking up my R1T this weekend ? I feel like I’m about to step into a whole new world
