Rivian had some bugs that they've worked out, it was mentioned in previous patch note updates. I'm sure it's possible they have other outstanding ones, but the vast majority of the problems have been resolved. I've personally never had any 12V issues and my truck has definitely seen some abuse with the exception of hanging anything directly off of the 12V system that the truck can't anticipate.
Do you think the capacitor vs 2nd battery is then just cost saving? Or maybe just 50% less likely for a battery failure?

Also wondering as mine ages, how long until proactive replacement of the 12v batteries will be appropriate, or will the truck give some warning that the 12v should be replaced, so it doesn't die in some parking structure where removal is extra challenging, etc....?

There's a separate DC-DC converter on each battery. I think what was overlooked is architecting it so they could both initiate off the primary 12V system. I'm pretty sure Rivian is able to monitor both sides.
More than anything, it would seem like the new battery+capacitor system might allow the full system to come up from the jump leads in the back rather than having to charge both batteries separately.

I hope I never have to do this in the dark. I know I will screw it up or drive off without one of those covers

Anyone carrying a jump box for emergencies? Steady at 30A seems tough to find?
Are you going to carry the jump box on your person or a bag with you wherever you go? Because you if you keep it in the truck, and the 12v dies, the truck won’t unlock. Ask me how I know.

Frunk manual release inside the driver's side wheel well. Also requires tools to access though.

I am hoping for a manual key inside the keyfob, in the next gen R1, that can open the doors and frunk, in the event of a power failure in the truck. That would be a nice capability in some situations where being stuck outside the vehicle might be dangerous, etc...

Thanks for the tip - I just moved my jump start battery (that may or may not provide 30 A for long enough).

Curious how much clearance is needed to access the manual frunk release? In kneel mode it doesn't look like there's a lot of space. Do you have a link to instructions?

Looks like Rivian finally updated the jump-starting guide to indicate how to jump the vehicle including the secondary battery.

Will be curious if people are able to recover their dead vehicle following the guide now. Present in the tow-operators guide and owner's guide.

Very practical

Can 12V be charged if truck dies because of battery? With something beefy like a Hulkman charger? If you kept it in the frunk could you access the charger if fob fails and you have no access to tools? Like camping off the grid with no one else nearby.

It needs to be capable of maintainining 30A output to power all of the 12V electronics in the truck in the case where the DC-DC power unit is not working properly.

I'm a newbie with a question. How to tell if my 3-week-old R1T has an older 2 12v battery system or does it have just the one and a capacitor? The nice guy that hauled it out to me didn't really answer that question. He just showed me where to get to the leads beside the hitch in the rear. So if it now only has one 12 v battery, where is it?
