Picked up my R1S last Friday. Earlier this week (at around 200 miles) I started getting the "Service 12V battery" warning on dash, with the little yellow battery icon. Rivian tech support had me to a soft reset and a hard reset, went away for half of a day but it has came back and doesn't really go away anymore, despite doing a couple more resets along the way. I live in Colorado where it has been pretty cold lately, but the R1S is usually parked in my garage (still cold there). Anyways, they have me bringing in the R1S to the service center on Tuesday.

Also have noticed random "AWD permanently engaged, service vehicle soon" warnings (may not be the exact wordage) which when this happens I am unable to change drive modes or suspension height. These usually happen when I am already driving, and tend to go away after a few minutes. Pretty frustrating as the vehicle has less than 200 miles on it.
Those AWD errors are probably just because the 12v is weak.

I am using my butt-o-meter, in how aggressively the charge door opens and closes. It varies a fair amount, from super fast to fairly slow. That tells me the voltage is swinging a fair amount. If it gets super slow, that would seem to indicate lower voltages.

It sure would be nice if we could get a 12v system voltage read-out somewhere. And if it drops below a threshold, then an alert on app.
I got one at Amazon. Plugged it into the cigarette lighter under center dash. Constant lit readout. Uses very little current. Works great also has a USB.

I'm going to guess is a combination of the new firmware that doesn't charge the 12v as often and the persistent vampire drain just decimating the battery.

Probably a hardware problem they can't fix ota.

So I'm starting to get the recurrent "motor fault detected" warning, especially starting up on cold morning. This was the initial sign that the 12V battery was going bad. So annoying...seems like I'm going to have to get my 12V battery replaced, AGAIN! This all started again after the most recent update. I wonder if the recurrent updates are causing issues that the batteries start to get drain due to background software activity?
?

To me the 12v system should have some minimum voltage and anytime it gets to it, it communicates to appropriate main computer to immediately trigger that charging system on line.

What am I missing and why does this seem so difficult?

Until the 400v pack is dead....I dont understand why the 12v system should ever fail, unless a catastrophic short, etc...

The 12V battery is supposed to get charged by the LI-Ion batteries. So as the 12V drains (lights, window lifts, wipers and so on), its being charged by the main battery system.

I don't understand why these batteries are failing or losing charge. Are the vehicle SOC kept low such that it doesn't allow the 12V to be charged or does Rivian only charge the 12V when plugged in at a charger (home/station)?

I just got the 12V error too. After my truck was in the service center for 1.5 weeks and they told me the batteries were "fine".

Now I gotta take it back to the SC... Apparently they don't replace batteries with mobile service anymore. What a PITA.

Seems 12v battery replacement should be mobile capable.

It used to be. I spoke to a mobile tech previously who said he thought he had finished all of the ones in my region... I guess things are changing. Super PITA since my truck was just in the SC a month ago. Wish they had replaced the batteries then instead of just "testing" them.

It is one of the problems intrinsically with mobile service. It simply costs more. And the incentive will always be to cut back on it and make customer bring vehicle in for service. Unless sales fall and they get that kinda of feedback that customers care enough to buy something else.

Hi Evo7,
any update on your battery issue?
we received our R1s last Saturday (9/30/23) from Denver Service Center, got the same "Service 12 V Battery" warning this morning... yes, it was a bit colder than usual this morning. Soft reset won't clear it, but a hard reset did the trick. Wondering if it will come back...
Any update from your experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the Chicago Service Center this morning to pick up my R1S, which had some panel alignment issues at delivery. Unfortunately, when I got in the car to drive away, it threw the "Service 12v Battery System Soon" error message, so had to leave it at the service center and head back home. Annoying. I never saw that message before dropping it off at service.
