I’m waiting for an R1S but I am really, REALLY happy for the all the R1T folks out there! Both solutions look great to me.

I was impressed with the thought they put into the manual cover, which I assumed would be simpler:
1. The fact that it seems to lock in place without relying on the tailgate means that you can drive with the cover on and the tailgate down if you need to.
2. I think it is nice that pulling a section out brings the remaining section(s) towards you, which seems quicker and easier than having to work your way forward after removing each one.
3. The case with padded separators to keep the sections from getting scratched is a very nice touch for people who want to keep things looking factory fresh.

Bravo, Rivian!

I'm personally wondering if the old one will be retrofitted with the new one. And will it be at our cost or their's?
They've already communicated like a year ago to R1T owners that have the powered tonneau that they'd retrofit it to existing vehicles at no cost to the owner

We pick up our LG/FE tomorrow in Normal & we're taking the tour of the production facility as well. It doesn't have the powered tonneau cover. I watched the MarketWatch video in the Normal plant yesterday with RJ & a reporter, then this video just posted. I believe Rivian is doing the right things to take care of us. We're their advertisement for future customers. I think we're gonna make it. I won't get any sleep tonight. Can't wait til I see my truck for real. Oh, by the way, I'm ordering a power tonneau cover as soon as they're available online to do so. Have a great day folks!

They've said they'd repair failed tonneaus under warranty... That doesn't mean everyone gets the new design.

It appears that the power tonneau slat design is no more? Isn’t that a continuous piece of…… something? Lol….
My anecdotal service person experience was describing just this very thing.

anyone know if those who ordered manual tonneau's can upgrade to the powered one? id be willing to pay. otherwise, i think that means the new powered tonneau is legacy and will only be supported for those who got it early on.
Rivian previously said manual tonneaus cannot be retroactively updated to powered. Might change, but doubt it.

The video segment also mentioned bringing the powered tonneau "back to the plant" and "back into production". I would say that means the powered tonneau option is coming back to the R1T Configurator for future orders.

Eventually, I'd like to get a second Rivian. Probably the model with the LFP batteries and dual motors and generally less expensive options. I'd totally go for the manual cover for that one.

I'm really surprised Rivian used four interlocking flat panels like their marketing materials said it was going to be, to make a tonneau cover too /s
Sorry, did I drop my /s?

I'll pull my truck up to the back of my shop and record the cover going in and out. You won't be able to hear it.

Definitely won’t change. The trucks produced without the powered tonneau don’t even have the button for it, so would make any retrofit that much more complicated and the last thing they need right now is to tie up the service centers even more.

Anyways, very pleased with the manual cover - it looks great and easy to add/remove/store.

Glad to FINALLY see a working prototype for the manual cover, but my original config did have the powered cover. As happy as I'll be to get my manual cover when it's finally released, I do hope there's some chance they'll offer the new powered cover as a retrofit.

That said, they've already shown more flexibility in the vehicle's wiring harness than most manufacturers in that they remove or add things on the fly. Most commodity vehicles have one harness that includes all options and they just don't plug stuff in when an option isn't ordered. Meaning back before cruise control was a standard feature you could just buy the modules/pieces and add it yourself at a later date. If Rivian opted to remove the plugs and such for the powered cover in the cases where it wasn't ordered, then a retrofit will never be possible.
