FYI If you turn off the headlights manually, they will be set back to auto the next time you go and drive it. I've definitely done that sometimes when I'm going to sit in it for a bit.
I personally don't hate the way it works now, I just wish it worked better and had less vampire drain, I still think the whole proximity key thing is a big part of that.

Or you could me. They gave me a niro ev loaner while Truck being serviced. Parked in garage and left it there not realizing I had to turn it off. Found out half a day later.
This exact scenario gets my family to accuse me of losing my mind, but it’s conditioned after years of Tesla, and now the R1

I’ve mentioned this in a few other threads, but there really needs to be some way to turn on/off the truck in the traditional sense.

I’m currently sitting in the R1T waiting for a table at a restaurant. Sitting here in park the headlights and taillights are on, causing people to think I’m about to leave my spot. The A/C is running unnecessarily. When I get out my music is going to keep playing until I lock the door. If I had proximity key enabled all of this would happen just by walking past the truck. Sure, all of these things can be controlled independently, but having one-touch to put everything in the appropriate state is way more convenient.

I understand the desire to simplify and remove buttons, which is why I put “add” in quotes. This could be an entirely optional feature enabled via software using the existing switchgear.

My preferred option is the Park button. If you’re already in Park and press the button again it could control the power state of the truck. Another option is the right steering wheel buttons which currently only function when in drive for cruise control/trailer brake.
I certainly appreciate not having a power button.

I love being able to just get in and go. End of drive, just get out and walkaway. Absolutely wouldn't want to give up that capability. I understand the OP's point. For me, when sitting, I just shut off the headlights and a quick two tap to turn off the AC, if it was on. Not sure how many people sit in the trucks and want it to be completely off? I usually want to leave the radio on. Usually want climate control So about the only thing shut off to avoid others from thinking I'm leaving, is a quick tap down on the stalk to shut off the auto headlights. I think most that are sitting in their trucks are going to be using at least something, thus an "all-off" is probably low on the list of wants for many. Just my two cents. Can see the benefits for the few, but likely something I'd never use and absolutely don't want to give up the "get in and go" capability.

@astonius, the OP, isn’t asking for elimination of the current behavior but rather for the addition of a user-selectable option to use an existing button to instantly command power off.

This echos my thoughts. I love the no start/stop button convince. Just get in and go...just get out and leave. Love it. And when I sit in car, I want audio and hvac on. I just turn off headlights with stalk.

I don’t understand what’s so complicated or frustrating about pressing a single button to tell the truck to turn on rather than it guessing or assuming your intentions. I also proposed the truck turn on when you hit the brake pedal, something you have to do to put the thing in gear anyway. Is that too laborious?

Then with the “turn off” scenario, let’s say you forget to hit the Park button. Then the truck could just behave the way it does today. Once everyone is out and the truck is locked it’s off. The Park button simply becomes an optional way to override the power state quickly and effectively without having to tap through screens to enter a special mode or disable a bunch of individual features.

And again, this would all be optional.

What other appliance or tool do you use on a daily basis you’d be happy assuming you want it on/off rather than pressing a button to command it?

Op,
I understood exactly what you meant with your first post, your request makes perfect sense to me.

But now it seems your innocent request has turned into a useless debate. Your best course of action is to just contact Rivian and make your request instead of trying to get validation here which accomplishes nothing.

Thanks, I have provided this feedback directly to Rivian, but my request alone is unlikely to go anywhere without some support. I figured there’d be some who don’t really care, but there seems to be quite a few who are adamantly against the idea outright. I am genuinely trying to understand why.

I agree, I would want a button that shuts the damn thing off without having to go through any hoops. I guess others like doing the hoop thing, but I doubt you'll be able to understand why.

And turning off is one half of the equation. Turning on is just as frustrating, if not more so. I don’t want my music to start playing as soon as I open the door. I also don’t want the HVAC running unnecessarily when I’m loading things in the truck, wasting energy pumping hot or cold air literally out the door.

Good point, I don’t want the vehicle powered up while I’m loading, hooking up the trailer, etc. Sometimes that‘s 20-30 minutes. Similar when I’m surf fishing. I might open the door to grab something 3 or 4 times during the day. The vehicle should not power up and waste energy. This type of activity is common with an “adventure” vehicle.

Good point again. Also many times I'm in a different frame of mind or mood when I get back in a vehicle. Usually I don't want the stereo automatically playing, I usually just want peace and quiet.

Put me in the camp of this is a great idea. My angle comes from the fact that I am so distrustful of all "companies" these days and my paranoid brain is imagining the scenario where Rivian wants us to start paying for app features. Yes I know pushing the park button twice is also software but it feels harder to take away software features embedded in the car than it is software found on a phone and I hate having everything relying on my phone.

This is starting to sound more like “blackout mode” like on military vehicles.
…which would make a lot of sense on an adventure vehicle, too
