I previously praised the Driver+ lane keeping ability. And for the most part, it has generally been pretty good. But, several others posted issues that they've had with it. Today's experience, demonstrates what they were talking about.
After years of experience with the Tesla system, I learned, never rely too heavily on it. Never take it for granted. As good as it is, it can make some serious mistakes at the worst possible moments without any notice. I always preach with these things, please, please, please, ALWAYS PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION.
Some of these systems get too good and make it very easy to get lulled into a sense of comfort. But just when you think it's improved, it can very rudely remind you that these systems are still very much in their infancy phases and still in development.
Today's incident was a bit of a surprise. Was in the fast lane on the freeway with only the wall next to me on the left. Freeway was curving ever so slightly to the left. The truck all of sudden tried to make a hard left. Was certainly far too close for comfort for me. While my hands were already on the wheel and I was ready, already being close to the wall as it was, there wasn't a lot of margin for error. I caught it in time, but did certainly put a scare into me as it was so unexpected.
Based on this experience, I'll not be using it any more in the far left lane when there's no shoulder. Will much prefer to have that extra margin for error. Love the capabilities and the fact that we even have such systems. But, today was just another reminder of how dangerous they can be if you don't pay very close attention at all times. NEVER, EVER, EVER take them for granted or allow yourself to get distracted. It could be the last thing you do.
Will still happily use the feature, just going to do so in situations where there is more margin for error.
