I wanted to start a thread for our week camping trip. Traveling with family and two other similar trailers (funny thing is mine is the heaviest by far)

Distance:
Chico to Lake of the Siskyous ~130 miles
Elevation Change : ~3500' ft

To get these numbers I've driven a bit on the highway on flat ground round trip to get an idea for wind factor.

Assumptions:
1100 watts per mile @ 65, Driving at 95% Speed
Added Wieght ~ 8000lbs

Stop 1:
Anderson EA charger arrive with 39% Charge to 71% ( Depending on my arrival %, this may need to be adjusted)
Stop 2:
Lakehead Chargepoint
Arrive 25%, Charge to 72%.
( Stopping here for long lunch and slow charge) again, may need to make adjustments.

The second and 3rd leg has me a little worried, it's a long grade up to Dunsmier, so I'll be very careful to make needed adjustments after the first stop.

Arrive at Lake of the Siskyous with 10%, Charge up at the RV camp :)

Wish me luck!

Question…I’ve seen a few YT vids talking about charging using RV site/plugs…so is there an adapter or surge protector needed to charge truck? Or is that just something needed for camper?

Awesome, thanks for posting. Will be curious to hear how the charging stops go. My big fear of hauling the trailer is having to unhook every time I need a charge because getting in/out of the stalls can be challenging depending on the location.

Many campsites use a standard 14-50 (240v@50a
) that will work with the existing mobile charger.

You can also get a TT-30 adapter (120v@30a) but you have to make sure the Rivian only pulls 24a max.

I have a few other adapters for camping convince as well (14-50 to TT-30 splitter).

Then a separate 6-50 kit to use as an extension (but haven't ever had to use it).

I bought a 14-50 to 30 amp adapter but the rivian won't except it. It seems like it is expecting 240v. I think I'll need a native Rivian adapter to plug into a 120/30amp, which doesn't look like they sell yet?
Luckily my in-laws site has a 14-50, so charging the truck at thier site. I would be kind of screwed otherwise, limited to 120/12 amp which would take DAYS!

Interesting, I have a couple of EV specific TT-30 adapters, but haven't tried on the R1T, I will try them and let you know.

I don't think an adapter will help. The AC charger is onboard the truck and is likely hard-limited to 15amp at 120v.

I live in Reno and frequently head over Donner pass with my 25' Airstream, curious to see how the hills impact the range while towing. I'm scheduled for delivery this Friday, so I'll play around a bit.

I'd be very interested to know the range as well in an Airstream. We've been eyeing an Airstream for a while.

Following up as promised, confirmed both of my TT-30 adapters work with Rivian mobile charger. Putting a disclaimer here that you need to set the amperage to 24a in the vehicle every time. Just unplugging the mobile adapter to try another TT-30 adapters the vehicle went back to 48 amps and started pulling more than 24 amps. That concerns me in case of power outages, etc. I will do some more testing to see if that is also because I unplugged the cable from the vehicle.

Safer bet would be to is the regular 120v plug, or find a 50a circuit.

Here is the link to the one I think is best as it fits in the charging bag and the matching Rivian yellow is icing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07XNSXWM4

here's a great source for adapters as well. EVSE Adapters – Electric vehicle charging solutions, adapter cords for EV, RV, welders, and more. Charge anywhere.

in the early days of tesla prior to SC network expansion we learned how to use/carry several adapters, and extension cords. i have a 30ft 240 and a 50 foot 115 heavy duty cords in my frunk along with 5 or 6 adapters.

Well, sadly the R1T didn't make it home.. Major failures coming home down the moutain out of Anderson in 100 deg Temps. First low battery voltage failure, then low coolant warning, battery warm warning and then the truck went Into an emergency shutdown procedure and I couldn't get off the highway so I'm stuck attached to the trailer, with now way to unbrick the truck so I can at least get the trailer home (only about 30 miles from home).
At this point Rivian said they have never dealt with this situation (no way to move vehicle, or release E brake.)
It was all going so well.. this was the easy part coming downhill..

I'm currently waiting ( 3 hours so far) on a busy I5 truck highway, waiting on a tow truck and a CHP vehicle so we can get my trailer and truck home, then off to the service center..
Ugg
