@timesinks Bravo, thanks so much for taking time out of your fun day to report this great data!

Two biggest things for me...

1) 0.8 miles/kWh driving slowly on muddy roads is surprising. I don't care what the road conditions are...that consumption is bonkers. Sounds like you got 2.3 m/kW in that home leg (which is about my expectation) so it was probably just the conditions and the stops you mentioned.

2) Charging curve - it's just one session of course but it's a poor one. And it's not like the battery was cold, the speed was good to start and then got erratic, mostly dropping. Getting only 60kW @ 50% SOC is is NOT going to fly.

At that rate, it would have taken another 40 minutes to get to 80% SOC if you had kept going.. A total of 70 minutes from 15-80%.

Again it's just one session and we don't really know what happened. Even if it's the car, things can be optimized...just hoping this curve is not the norm.

Thanks again, any further charging/consumption data would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't read too much into it. We had been doing more stopping than driving. I wish there was a breakdown, but I imagine most of that was spent on climate due to the very low mileage

Thank you for the brilliant write up! It's great to see someone living in a very nice part of the country enjoying the Rivian in the way it was meant to be. Cheers!

One thing we tested is what happens if you don't touch the wheel. After progressively getting more insistent, it will begin stopping the vehicle (at this point, I intervened because I was on an active freeway). After getting that level of scolding, Driver+ will not re-engage until your next drive.
Wait... Huh? The Rivian website claims Driver+ is hands-free. Are you saying Driver+ is not a hands-free system?

@timesinks. Thanks. Wondering if I can get my 100 lb dog in there.haha. He's a weenie and waits for me to lift his back legs up so he can enter the back seat in my Volt. Don't think I can do that in the R1T unless I want a back injury soon.

The hardware is there to support hands-free but the software doesn’t allow it, yet. Hopefully a future OTA update will enable it.

It would be nice if a future OTA update could provide a breakdown of consumption, such as how much was spent on HVAC vs propulsion vs accessories.

Climate for you - or did you try leaving the dogs alone? Interesting to see your rear-seat setup...I switched back to the R1S in December because we were expecting another dog (a 5yo Samoyed - just got back from picking her up in Oregon yesterday!) and I wasn't sure the rear seat in the R1T would work out.

And if climate for you...did you find you have to keep the fan on all the time? When we did our first mile drive...3 of us (me, wife, guide)...dry conditions...the windows misted up pretty quickly. I thought I read that the default is no fan...so curious to hear how the HVAC did on your trip (particularly when it got rainy).

The 66 kW you were getting definitely sounds like a charger issue. I was at an EA charger where it was rated at 150kW. Every time I plugged into this one charger, it would max out at 48kW. After a few sessions on this one charger (I live close by to this charger and this one unit was easiest to park into), I thought I'd try another one out of the 3 at that location. Bam! I instantly got 152kW on the new one. Some of these chargers are not kept up well or don't work to full potential. I've been at 350kW chargers and are limited to 150kW as well even thought I could go higher
@timesinks - what an awesome writeup. Thank you!!!!

For those of us new to all of this EV stuff, what exactly does one see (in the vehicle and on the charging post) that indicates what the charge rate is (66 kW vs 152kW)? Or is that part of the problem, there isn't a good indication so you just have to wait for the charging to happen to figure out how long it's going to take?

Also, did you have to plot your charge curve manually, or is that part of the R1T's software (in vehicle and/or on your phone)?

Thanks a ton!!

I agree is sounds like the disappointment could be on EA's side- it sure looks like the typical issues. It would be nice if improvement comes in an OTA but I wouldn't hold my breath...

This for sure. My EV6 does this and it is quite useful, even will tell you as you drive how much additional range you can get if you turn off the HVAC.

I hope we'll be able to pull the data with an OBD reader for this exact reason. Suuuper helpful to know if the battery temp is just too hot/cold. That EA station specifically was the problem for me yesterday for whatever reason.
I talked to one of the engineers at the Denver event yesterday and asked him specifically about the OBD port. The sense I got which jived with intuition is that while it is there (i believe required by law) it probably isn't going to be much help with damn near anything. OBD is from a different era and really not suited to do any sort of diagnostics on software governed hardware like these cars.

I suspect that once the community matures a bit there will be several long threads filled with people figuring out different ways to extract and analyze information from these cars and very few of them will involve OBD protocols. There's already plenty of this going on in teslas - the unfortunate part is that we're entering a new era where none of this is standardized anymore so most of it will be of little help here.
