R2 vs Model Y 70-MPH Highway Range Test (by Out of Spec)

Rivian Roamer has R2 data logged for 23 vehicles over 15K miles thus far:

It seems to have passed without comment that the 20" A/Ts are getting substantially better mileage than the 21" A/S tires according to Rivian Roamer data. Small samples, and perhaps the car configuration isn't being updated when drivers switch tires/wheels, but the pattern is the opposite of what the EPA numbers suggest they should be.

Do the Scorpions suck or are the BFGs better than anticipated? Or is it just that the people with A/S tires are driving faster and negating the range benefits?

Uh THIS is what ppl are doing with the r2 and the A/S scorpion tires.

Exactly. My R1T lifetime efficiency is similar to EPA MPGe when I *do not* account for charging losses.

Interesting, my lifetime is 2.14 mi/kwh which just exceeds my EPA rating of 285 mi.

11,000 miles is not a big enough sample size to draw any conclusions

I guess it's because haven't owned an EV before but Rivian saying the R2 gets 330 miles my thought was if I'm on a road trip and driving 15-85% SOC I could expect to get over 200 miles of range between charges. That's a big difference from what the top early real world tests are showing.

The two most common road trip destinations my wife and I will be making to see family is about 400 or 500 miles away. That's going to double our needed charge stops.

Maybe they should have cut down on some of the rear storage underneath the spare tire or the frunk and squeezed in a little more juice.

Is this a deal breaker? Honestly I don't know. It's a good thing my order window is dec-feb and I'll have time to lose some sleep over it.

70% of 89kwh is 62.3kwh. At constant 70mph(2.83 m/kwh), you are looking at 176miles of range.

Honestly you won't be charging to 85%. Most EVs, including the R2 charging curve drops off a cliff up top.

What's the SOC most are generally using on a road trip? If you're not going to go above 80% because of charge speeds then how low are people dropping to?

I live in Idaho, my sister is west of Portland Oregon and my wife cousin is in the Salt Lake City area. There are some really dead zones on those drives. I've looked and played with ABRP to see what routes offer charging options but I'll have to look more closely at that the estimated charge and range it's been calculating.

This exact video is maybe why Rivian didn’t give Kyle or any influencers priority. They knew this video was going to come, and they wanted to sell as many R2’s as they could before it did come out.

disappointing range numbers given a Solterra has the exact same 70 mph range in tests and it’s $15k less

Me? I've always done around 70-75mph on freeways where it's the posted speed limit.

I road trip a lot, most of my legs between charges are 100-130 miles, usually stay between 55-70% max so it stays in higher charge rates. More often than not by the time I take a bio break and get a drink it is time to leave. My first stretch of the day is usually longer as I charge higher over night.

This exact video is maybe why Rivian didn’t give Kyle or any influencers priority. They knew this video was going to come, and they wanted to sell as many R2’s as they could before it did come out.

Rivian literally gave Kyle a whole extra set of 21" wheels to test this out as soon as he wanted. Rivian even took the car back to service and mounted them on the car at the factory so RivianTrackr could break the tires in. They accommodated him pretty well outside of letting him cut ahead of everyone else in line.
