Went on an Alaskan Cruise with the family on July 20th through the 29th and parked our R1S for the duration in a nearby parking garage. Had a great outcome charging it to 100% for the 30 minute ride, parked it with 90% remaining and returned to it with 76% remaining. Here are the details:

  • Parked charge: 90%
  • Pickup charge: 76%
  • Time: 4am on July 20th to 11:45pm on July 29th, 10 full days
  • Temps: withering in the DC area. around 100 degrees. R1S was parked in parking garage under building, but at surface level near back of first row
  • R1S state: locked, gear guard on
  • App usage: None. Did not open app entire duration, even with the new 2.0 version coming out and a lot of curiosity, I resisted
  • Events: More foot and vehicle traffic than I expected. This hotel is popular for both people staying and for people parking for the nearby airport. Looking at the gear guard videos it recorded roughly 40 videos a day. Mostly people walking by with luggage or parking in the spaces to the left/right. No "incidents" as I was parked very close to a pillar that protected on that side and gave plenty of room on the other. A lot of videos of people pointing and looking in the windows, but only briefly as their travel partner usually waved for them to hurry up for their flight or shuttle
  • Other: After the full 10 days of it sitting there, the suspension appeared to be a little lower than standard as I approached, but it was late and I didn't look closely. I had the key fob in my backpack and the Rivian woke up and handles popped out without hesitation about 10 ft from the vehicle. Got in it, dropped it in drive, picked up the family and luggage at the hotel drop off loop, and then drove the 30 minutes home. Parked it in the garage and didn't plug it in, same charge available next morning.

Overall very happy with the performance considering gear guard was on. I am glad we put it in the garage there because the area had a lot of bad thunderstorms during the week with some marble and even quarter size hail.

Nice experiment , thanks for the details. On the one hand 14% battery sounds like a lot.

But on the other hand, people underestimate how much power even a single video camera pulls. I've got a single forward looking dash cam in my Ford Expedition and it will completely drain the 12V truck battery if you leave it running when parked for more than a day or two. (Sadly the expedition 12V outlet is direct to the battery, not linked to the ignition switch, so I have to remember to turn the camera on and off each time I drive it...)

That’s quite good with a high traffic area and gear guard running. Our Tesla model Y loses barely any charge a day without sentry mode running, but we had it running for 2 days in a high traffic parking lot and lost 8%.

still seems like a lot of power being used to simply run a few cameras.

Great write-up. Curious, did you look how far back your videos were dated? I parked for one-day at Seaworld and I guess there was enough traffic where by the time I got back to the car, the first half of the day's videos were all deleted.

At 40 videos a day, if you scroll all the way to the first video in your history, was that well within your parking duration or do you think you are missing any additional videos?

Onboard storage seems rather limited and would've preferred it offloading to my 1TB external storage. On one of the videos still accessible, one individual pushed on each of the door handles to see if the door would open.

It was also 100 degrees. I know both my Rivian and Tesla use more energy when parked in temps over 100 degrees. I can occasionally hear fans kick on to cool things down.

I did a similar duration test during a vacation to Hawaii back in May. Doors locked and GG off at home. Parked in a secured garage with 70 deg daytime temps. Day 1 SoC 70%. Day 11 SoC 60%. Resisted the urge to check the truck thru the app, keeping it in sleep mode. I was impressed with <1% daily loss.

That is pretty much what I experienced in NY/JFK, 8 days and 5 days for two separate trips. Plenty of power to get home no worries at all.

@jeeden please go back to Alaska but with gear guard off. For science. (@ER1T thanks for posting your data above)
While 1% is better than 2%, I still feel they are shrugging it off a bit just because it is the smallest unit of measure. That's still a whole lot of power over a week or month. Especially when you are far from an airport and need 30-40% battery to get there.
Any sweet whale pics?

Given the camera resolution is circa 1998, maybe they are drawing as much power as one of these babies from that era:

Just got back from being gone for 10 days in Prague and Munich with both R1S and Model 3 at 80% unplugged, no security and unlocked.

Checked each vehicle twice a day on apps and came home to Model 3 at 76% and R1S at 68%.

Rivian can do better and hope it does.

Obviously the concern was the 12V battery status while sitting in the garage for 10 days. Both have no issues.

Model 3 doesn’t have air suspension that tries to adjust every time you wake it out of sleep mode by checking on the app. Probably could’ve seen +3/4% by leaving it alone.

Rivian doesn't have to adjust air suspension each time wakes out of wake mode if it's parked without any proximity key sensing. That would save some energy drain,

The point isn't Model 3 is so much better at non-use drain; rather, Rivian can do much better to minimize the drain. My Model 3 used to have similar drain early on as Rivian but over time, it has improved to what it is today few years ago.

Just got back from Colorado for a quick visit. My R1T sat at Seatac for 77 hours with Gear Guard on*. I used the trip meter to rule out SOC display calculation idiosyncrasies.
3.5kWh * 24h/d * 1/77h =~ 1.1kW loss / day

That's ~0.8% range loss / day

* Even though Gear Guard was enabled (I never touch the settings) the last video captured was the day before my trip. Version 2023.26.0. My last time at Paine Field captured a dozen videos or so and used more energy but It was a different software version.
