Got into an accident about a week ago when lights were out due to high winds. Got hit on the passenger side pretty hard by someone who didn’t stop. Just got news today they are considering it a total loss. Not sure I can get another Rivian due to me getting amazing deal in June right before Gen 2 announcement including Employee Referral Discount and Large battery discount. Thinking of parting it out. I have the flashlight, Camp Speaker, all weather floor mats, Gear Guard cable, frunk net, first aid kit, and air compressor kit. I even have a A2Z NACS adapter. Trying to get a feel for interest in all this but not sure how to sell on here. Should I post each item in the Marketplace?

First, glad you're OK!

Second, really sorry to hear about the ordeal. It looks like the truck did its job and really stood up to the collision well.

If you are able to keep it, do you still get a payout? I thought insurance pays you for the replacement or current value (depending on your policy), and they recoup the cost by keeping the vehicle and selling it for salvage?

We briefly considered keeping a totalled-but-driveable Model S that our in-laws were involved in an accident in, thinking the battery alone as $20-30k, but honestly it was a ton more work than we had any business getting into. We definitely helped them take anything not bolted down - floormats, the mobile charger, etc.

I think the first question is to go to your insurance and see how much the payout is. If you get the replacement value of the truck, that might be $4-50k or so which could be enough for a lightly used dual motor?

If you're getting an insurance payout you will need to buy the truck back from the insurance company with a portion of the payout assuming you own the truck free and clear. If you have a loan, the money will go to the bank.

It's probably not worth buying it and parting it out.

Sorry yes. Should have also said I’m totally fine and the truck did its job for sure. It was a good impact but I was able to walk away. Rivian did an amazing job calling me immediately to ask if I was ok and they called police and tow for me. Very grateful for a well built truck that took quite an impact. My only complaint was the accident was not recorded as an incident so no footage of the crash exists.

Have you ever bought a totaled vehicle before and parted it out? It is a lot off fing work. I have done it with motorcycle. It can be lucrative but you need to know each part and value, tear down storage etc…

Who is your insurance carrier and do you have new replacement coverage or they will only cover to the current value of the vehicle?

Did you have a solid state drive in the console for continuous recording, @bersurker?

That will record pretty much everything the four main cameras see any time you're driving.

Best wishes!

I didn’t have a usb drive plugged in at time of accident. Just my luck that a week before the drive that was in there failed and I got a message to format drive.

I’m waiting to hear about the value of my vehicle from my insurance company Mercury. The truck was leased and I have a payoff and hopefully they give me more than that since I will have to have some moneys to put down on a new vehicle.

Not sure you can buy it and part it out even if you wanted to... Check your lease agreement and insurance, shit gets real weird with totaled vehicles in a lease.

I think OP just wants to sell the accessories. Not really part out the real parts.

Leasing doesn't work this way, as you're not the owner of the vehicle. This is one reason why it's wise to never put money down on a lease. In the event of a total loss, you recoup none of it.

Agree with the others, if it was leased you will get nothing except out of it. You do not own the vehicle in a lease, the bank does. They will be getting the insurance payout.

The most important thing to know is that the insurance company will try to screw you out of pretty much everything it owes you, even when the accident is the other person's fault and they are on the hook. When you buy a policy you are the customer. But once you make a claim you are the adversary, and they will treat you accordingly. If you owned the vehicle (not the leasing co) they would offer you "actual cash value" ("replacement value" is rare) which means they will make you a stupidly low offer and you would then have to argue and negotiate a better value (most likely you would lose money on this) or they would pay to fix the truck (and try to lowball you on that too). If you took the ACV they would give the truck to a salvage company who would auction it for parts. In your case with a lease you just walk away I guess, and it's their problem. You would not be given the option of buying it back for parts. Also keep in mind once they declare it a total loss it will have a salvage title and it won't be back on the road without a huge amount of effort, not worth it. Also, given that Rivian won't sell parts to a non-authorized collision shop or let authorized shops use third party parts, anyone who buys parts from your wrecked truck does so "illegally" and trucks repaired with those parts would probably be declared a voided warranty. I'd say unless you put a lot down on the truck you are lucky to have leased it. You can walk away and lease another one.

Any injuries? I hope all are ok. Sorry to see this.

The insurance needs to properly compensate you for the vehicle. There will be more deals on Gen2 if your interested. Also, used R1 vehicles are a tremendous value as well.

Please let us know what happens.
