So I like to see how things are built and I figured I should start with the disassembly of phone mag charger. There are other post on how to remove the charger from the arm rest area so I wont post about it. Hope you all enjoy.

It’s amazing that with all those coils, I still can‘t charge my phone. It’s almost as though this wasn’t tested at all. Rivian needs to provide free update to a working version when available.

Wow, a high quality unit for sure.. cost a pretty penny in any case.

I count 18 pairs of connecting wires (9 pairs on the top right, 9 pairs on the lower left) so 18 coils in total I guess? Don't see anything other than coils on that side of the case.

Thanks for the teardown!

Instead of designing a surface for a phone to not slide all over the place on or support for magnetic charging it seems that their solution was to try and pack as many induction coils in there as possible forgetting that it would have to stop and restart charging every single time it moved rendering it basically useless.

I bought one of those aftermarket ones with the magnetic support and that's what the truck should have had from the beginning.

The problem I had with the charger was do to the raised camera lens on the iPhone not allowing the phone to lay flat. Like @vordo, I ordered the TWRAPS solution which allows room for the camera lens to hang over the edge and the rest of the phone to lay flat. It looks factory, and is a magcharger for 2 phones simultaneously. This is the design Rivian needs to adopt and cannot be fixed by an OTA. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C9LBK82X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Great explanation as to why the OEM does not work. As soon as I installed my after market mag charging unit, it worked. R1S is a fantastic vehicle, but I am constantly amazed at how the simple is made complicated. Rivian needs to spend more time conducting production testing of novel ideas before rolling out solutions that don’t deliver.

Camera phone bumps were a lot more rare when this was being developed.
