i bought my R1T long before mid 2023 when hands free was still being touted, so I would argue that it is something we should have expected (not in this update, but when purchasing the vehicle). I’m not really upset about it, as it would have limited use for me, but the expectation was still there.
I also bought my Gen 1 in 2022 and had a reservation long before that. I still don't feel duped, as Rivian exceeded my expectations in other areas while not delivering in an autonomous regard. It's hard to forget that Rivian was a startup at the time, and it's common for startups to bite off more than they can chew.

The fact that we got the vehicles we did is impressive IMO.

Hey all. New owner here. Do R1 vehicles receive OTA software updates even when sleeping? Asking because when I get into the car at home, I notice the Wifi is off and remains so until the vehicle wakes up. LTE has one bar but Wifi is off when I get in. That makes me wonder, will I get pinged for the software update while parked at home?

Seems like Gen1 Quad are getting left behind. Not pleased.
New to tech? This is to be expected. Any tech heavy device you buy is obsolete the day you buy it. Phones, computers, TVs, game consoles, smart watches, etc. Buy it for the features it has the day you buy it, enjoy it for what it is for years.

Not only that, but people are forgetting that before OTA updates, the car had the features on the day you bought it and nothing more. Hardware updates happen and older models will get left behind.

If the hardware changes happen too frequently though, it's going to tank resale value and really piss people off. I think 4 years old is pretty short for a vehicle. It might be acceptable for other tech, but vehicles aren't disposable, they are long term purchases. That being said, Rivian does need these changes because they can't deliver what they want to on the gen1 hardware and they are still a startup.

no, not new to tech at all. Just when i put down the deposit and then purchased, i was told that there will be numerous updates to the software for this vehicle. No different than with Tesla. All models get updates and continue to get them.

...which is STILL true.
Just because they're not the updates YOU want doesn't mean they haven't given you updates.

Can't please everybody ... ?‍♂

2022 Rivian R1T LE
This has been known since Gen 1 came out. It's incredible how we get two different sets of responses here that directly contradict each other. One set is people who say that the Gen 2 upgrades aren't worth the cost, and the second set is furious that Rivian has improved vehicles just like every other automaker does, and their old one doesn't have the same features as a new one does.

All manufacturers add features to new cars that weren't available on the older ones, and Rivian has been saying that the Driver+ features on Gen 1 weren't going to ever be hands free since mid 2023 so this is something we should have expected.
Again, you are wrong. And missing the point.

Rivian touted the scalability and future-proofness of the Gen 1 platform well after sales began. This is the reason many Gen 1 owners are upset. And the reason we continue to speak out is not because were upset that Rivian is making updates, it's to help new and prospective owners manage their expectations with regard to Rivian's Autonomy claims.

I have read nearly all of your posts on this forum and, largely, find you to be a thoughtful, intelligent, rational member of the community, but your desire to continue to actively discredit legitimate claims and warnings on the topic of autonomy is baffling.

It's not the user-specific wants that are the issue, it's the missing Rivian promoted features that are the problem.

What's not to be expected is to be misled by the manufacturer as to the capabilities and support.

I got pinged by Rivian Roamer that my vehicles update is available. I'm on vacation so my vehicle has been parked with family in ATL. I'd appreciate anyone giving any feedback if they've had issues with the vehicle after update. Deciding if I should execute the update when I get back with family to try it out before the 3 hour drive to my home, or just wait until I get home in a couple days.
Thank you!

You should always read the fine print when you sign contracts. Rivian.com/legal/terms
Rivian R1T R1S Update 2025.06 is out! 1741790113685-0f

Also in the user manual:
Rivian R1T R1S Update 2025.06 is out! 1741790488233-8b

I'm sure there are others who are better at finding the CYA legalese that Rivian has in place--I've seen it before, but am not doing great at coming up with better, more complete sources.

But it's there. And readily available to peruse.

I'm not saying I don't want all of the cool features. But having an unreasonable expectation for them to make things work when the hardware isn't available is a good way to continue to be disappointed.

Failure to read the fine print does not constitute a breech of contract.
In other words, ignorance is not a substitute for being misled.

And having unreasonable expectations are the thief of joy!
Maybe we can all ask "What CAN my vehicle do that it couldn't when I took delivery?" (LOTS!)

And frame it that way, versus trying to frame it as some sort of bait and switch?

I have to agree. I was, sadly, not an early adopter, but have fallen in love with our R1T enough to buy a used R1S.

While I totally understand the need for Rivian to upgrade the HW efficiencies to work towards profitability as a brand new company, and I personally give them lots of leeway because of it - the constant changing around with hardware, even within generations, when the first vehicle hit the market ~3 years ago, is a bit much to swallow for some people. I feel especially for a Gen1 purchaser in Spring 2024 who was not aware of the change coming in tech (not saying Rivian was unclear, I don't know, but can see it being frustrating)

Can't please everybody ... ?‍♂
And conversely, just because YOU are satisfied doesn't mean everyone has to be.

Remember, it's partially because people have come to *expect*, demand, or complain about updates that we get them at all. If not one single consumer agitated or complained about x, y or z feature not being provided, or *should* be, you'd be getting no OTAs at all. They'd just be held back for the next model cycle the way many legacy automakers still do it.

Can't please everybody ... ?‍♂

But having an unreasonable expectation for them to make things work when the hardware isn't available is a good way to continue to be disappointed.

We have forum members who were verbally told that some of these changes were coming, despite the "legalese." The implication that one need to be a junior level hardware engineer with greater knowledge than the service rep assigned to them, versus believing what they're told, is the unreasonable expectation here. And no one appears to be signing on to class-action suits here, either, but they can absolutely be disappointed despite you telling them they have no right to be.
