My guess is you'll be well within the limits with a 27ft Airstream. Those run in the ~7700lb range with tongue weights around 750-800lbs. Since payload is 11,000lbs, it would be reasonable to have a tongue weight limit around 1,100lbs, otherwise one would have to tow a poorly balanced load.
I've been researching Airstreams and tow vehicles and have become pretty hung up with payload numbers. If 1,100 lbs payload is what we have to play with, then you have 300 lbs remaining for people and stuff. That's me and my wife but my 3 kids and anything we want to carry in the copious storage of the truck have to stay home. I'm finding the huge tow ratings are not achievable when you take in to account the payload capacity printed on the door jamb... What am I missing?

Payload on the R1T was reported (preliminarily) at 800kg (1764 lbs).

Assuming you had a tongue weight of 800lbs for the trailer, that would leave over 900lbs for "stuff".
What you load in the trailer would add only 10-15% to the payload. Adding 500 lbs to the trailer would take only 50 to 75lbs of your Rivian payload capacity.

Or less if it was rear of the trailer axles.

Had a friend that put water in the tank of his travel trailer because it lessened the tongue weight vs dry. I wouldn't personally do that though because many RVs don't have the best construction quality, and I've heard stories of things breaking due to towing with full fresh water tanks.

If you are looking to reduce stability and encourage sway, that's among the best ways to do it.

If there is still plenty of tongue weight, it's not an issue. I actually think he had a lot of extra weight up front.

I agree though that improperly loaded trailers (skewed significantly either way) are dangerous.

Why does the R1S have a lower towing capacity than the R1T? It would seem to me, that the towing capacity should be similar since they share the same powertrain and frame.
as with all other auto companies there are restrictions to make/models and loads on roads. Extra weight for the body and seats, etc. will lower the gross weight and towing capacity.

Assuming you put 4 200lb adults in the truck and some gear. You blow through 900lbs. What then? How does the truck handle? Can it handle the wear?

Not sure but for some reference the Tacoma TRD pro has 1100lbs payload and the ZR2 has 1500lbs. Both of those have a bigger bed.

So max payload is 1763 pounds, and max trailer tongue weight 810 pounds. That leaves 953 pounds for passengers and gear, assuming max tongue weight.

Yes I do, and also a boat. Two horse trailer is 7000lb max, boat is 5000lb.
I should clarify that I do not load my horse trailer to 7000lb, even though that is the rating. It is about 3000lb empty and my horses are under 1200lb, so it is less than 5500lb when I use it. Of course the boat trailer is the actual combined weight with my boat on the trailer.

I now have updated information on the R1T towing and payload capabilities. Pulling a fully loaded 11000lb trailer may reduce the passengers to 1 or 2. Depending on actual tongue weight. Tongue weight capability for the R1T is 1470 lbs, that would leave 294 lbs for passengers. If you are pulling a trailer that size, all of your gear can go into the trailer.

Hello and thanks for contacting Rivian! My name is Martin. How can I help today?

Q: The web site no longer shows data for maximum payload for the R1T, I am interested in what the maximum payload is. I also want to know the maximum tongue weight for trailer towing.
A: Sure thing! Let me get this info for you. Just one moment.
1,764 lbs for that payload. Let me get the tongue weight.
The trailer hitch receiver and vehicle structure are rated for a tongue weight of 1,470 lbs.

The reason I am waiting for the Max Pack (400+ mi) is that RJ has already stated that with the R1T range should be 414-424 miles. I plan on towing a 5,000 lb gross weight travel trailer (with all water, provisions, etc onboard). I hope I get 200 mile range, I figure this range should allow me to find some sort of charging point even if it is an RV Park overnight. Even though I would rather be boondocking in a National Forest for weeks on end. Utilizing the travel trailer rooftop solar(640 watts) and a little bit of portable panels should trickle charge 3-4 prime sun hours a day the R1T 5+ extra miles/day when just sitting at camp I then can drop the trailer and have some fun. Towing 200 miles is good enough for my plans with the R1T.
