Too complex to use while driving, or parking.

Boy I haven't used an odometer for an increment that small since the days I had to print out Mapquest maps to get to my work accounts every day.
Addresses are not the only thing of note.

My Garmin, DriveCam 76, firmly on the windshield of my R1T tells me everything along my route that the native navigation does not. As the latest update is supposed to list current speed limits, it is laughable. My Garmin even beeps when the speed limit decreases. (As a person who drove 5,000 miles a month for many years, this navigation and CC has a lot of growing to do). My Garmin tells me my exact speed as it uses GPS. My 20" wheels on my T are off about 1 MPH. I'm really glad that I have my Garmin on the windshield of this T. It gives me a lot of confidence.

The odometer is a general-purpose tool. It can be used for many possible things. I think Greg has made that point. Every time someone points out a new use for the odometer, people jump in to say how they would do the same thing different. Ok fine, Rivian can either give us the odometer, or a team of know-it-alls on call.

The other day I drove a nice loop from my house, about an hour and a half. If I had an odometer, I would know how far it is. But I don't. Don't care enough to plot a bunch of points on my phone.

When I drive my other EV, I like to track battery use versus mileage as I go up into the mountains and the elevation changes. It's a fun estimation game and I learn a lot about the impact on range. No way to do that in the Rivian.

Those things aren't a big deal, they just illustrate a general design philosophy of Rivian that I find really frustrating: they picture what they think you should do, and they enable that. Instead of giving you tools to empower you to do new things they might not have thought of.

This site works excellent for telling trip distances and has a really easy interface. Just for future reference.

Let's say you need to drive 8 tenths of a mile past a directed point, you look at your dash and see no odometer. A simple thing of the past, glance and see the OD and you could follow directions. Now you need to reach way over and find the Odometer, and it is not obvious or easy. So, you pull over and "Go fish". I ask you now, as you read this, can you even think the screen taps sequence and do so sitting at your computer? let alone while driving safely?
How about some numbers that stay on the driver's screen unless you pull over and turn them off?

Now, another old thing that was easy, turn off the vehicle and the AC stopped, the radio stopped, everything stopped. No need to search to see what is on and turn it off. PS, don't forget the little dots next to the seats for the AC, and notice if the radio is on but the volume down below the ambient noise so you can see it's on.
I look at the screen and see the dimmed words and icons that are always there and wonder if they are off or on. As well what pages do I need to search to see if something is running.
My points are just that it used to be easier to control simple things on a dashboard. To make matters worse, the power draw could be a problem if you were away from the car a long time.

By the way, I can't find the "Dos" to stop the kneeling and rising of my R1T every time I walk by it while at a friends house as well the locks and such. He asks, "What is your truck doing?" I reply, it's a smart truck, it's getting it's exercise.

Hi, to answer the question about Kneel mode, you want to leave your Rivian’s suspension in Auto mode. Then Kneel mode will show up so long as you’ve selected the toggle to do so. It doesn’t work if you manually change your ride setting. Only in auto mode

Also another interesting tidbit, my '21 Audi SQ5 Sportback Prestige doesn't show the odometer on the main screen always. You can get it there, but it requires a few button presses. This Audi has their digital dash.

I would like to see a similar implementation By Rivian overall though because you can also change the display to be an exploded map for.navigation. Being able to change that front screen on the fly to give an exploded view of efficiency, a racing display, navigation, music and car diagnostics would go a long way towards that usability while driving everyone here is talking about.

Does Garmin have a point setting feature? Hit that button and it measures distance between 2 points?

Our Volvo XC40 Recharge also does not show the odometer unless you work through the menus to get there. But the remaining range in mileage is always there which is nice.

The Volvo also has the ability to show Google map on the screen in front of the driver with your chosen route highlighted. This single feature is an amazing safety tool, no more looking to the side to see the map on a center screen, it is right there in front of you. Rivian will get there one day, it took Volvo almost two years of software development to really dial in what consumers want/need.

Thanks, I will try to select the manual mode. It is almost like the truck bows to me as I walk by sometimes, or stands up because I entered the room. I don't really mind, but the air compressor will wear out.

Thanks, yea, I'm just putting in my request for the features that I consider useful or not useful.

Not as such. Garmin gives you the GPS miles between you and a destination you enter. (This is an air mile distance initially). Then it will give you the miles, I believe, down to tenths by driving it. It will only do this from your location to a distant point.

So, no more measuring distances with my vehicle. If I want to measure long distances, I will need to get out and use a tape measure. I realize most people have never used a truck to measure a fence line or such to bid a contracting job. As a retired contractor having done outdoor projects, i did. As well non business things. I guess I am a spatial guy.

Ah, I understand why you would like that feature. I don't know of an application that tells you what you would like it to do.

I, on the other hand, have relied on Garmin GPS ever since they started making automotive GPS's. For 30 years, I have had a Garmin on my dash or windshield. This native Rivian system just doesn't tell me enough. Ten highway accidents in the last 10 years and every one of them has been on my Garmin camera and 100 per cent the other drivers fault. It has saved me thousands of $. The camera doesn't lie.

I thought the Rivian cameras did retain and could be used as a dash cam? I do not know how to do that, but if it can, I should for your very points. Likely Rivian could do that, they could even sell the up fit! You sound like me and my "Sharp wizard 512" back in 1992 or 3 or so. It had 512 Kbites of contact info.! All in a tiny 3"x5" folding case... I better not get the kids here upset about old tech, so my 68 year old mindset will say, thanks and if you know an easy dash cam that would fit on the R1T, let me know.

Yes, in fact I set up the Drive Cam in my T. It "hogs" one of my USB-C receptacles in fact. It takes up to a 2 TB flash drive. It doesn't say that it compares to my Garmin however, in that it records my exact location and speed. I'm not sure the Rivian Drive Cam does all this. Oh, and hey, I'm 80 years old. Never too old to learn this stuff).

My mother's new X6 does this same thing. I'm not sure why but it drives me nuts hearing my music or my podcast playing as I walk away from the car, kind of disappointed to hear it's the same with the Rivian. Maybe that's something they could reduce with more precise positioning of the key fob?
This is not normal behavior. My music or podcast stops about 1 second after I close my door.
