I understand why some of y’all want the Georgia plant abandoned because of the NIMBY’s, but that would just be Rivian cutting off its nose to spite its face. If they moved to another location, they’ll quite possibly run into the same thing again. They’ve also made good progress on the site prep and construction should be started pretty quickly once they give the green light.
I wish Rivian would announce the termination of GA plant. Pick a new location after profitability.

R2 can be built in Normal factory without the capital drain of a second factory.

But it can’t be built in the numbers they need. Normal can produce 100 to maybe 150k a year in addition to R1 and EDV. The model Y sells in the US alone over 250k so there is the market for a second factory for North America alone never mind European demand and the R3.

Agree. I hope no 2nd factory until profitability is achieved. Then, consider a 2nd factory. Normal is maxed out around 215k from internal sources. Rivian said "... Our total production for the year [2023] was 57,232. So approx R2 cap at Normal is around 145k with the balance R1 + EDV. A few quarters at this production/sales level and profit would be likely. Then, ramp the 2nd factory in a supportive location.

It sucks for sure when you settle in an area expecting one thing and progress upends it. But in that case, I'd blame the landowner (who presumably understood the local culture and didn't care), who decided to sell and open the door in the first place.

We see it all over (once) rural PA as well. Farmers selling land and in comes houses and strip malls. They're building around Gettysburg now.

None of that is Rivian's fault.
Agree that none of this is Rivian's fault.

According to a Fox 5 article, TWENTY SIX people willingly sold their property. It's clear that not everyone was against the project. 55% of the site was zoned agriculture, not the entire site. The site was documented and targeted for auto manufacturing as far back as 2016, well before Rivian was even on the radar. Jaguar Land Rover looked at the site iprior to 2016.

Interesting, I just noticed this site posted on another social media page this morning:

https://www.proudlymadeingeorgia.com/

Is this website new? It looks good, even if it's just a minor "nod" towards continuing the plant, it gives hope after some of the other negative news recently. ?

Expect as they get closer to launching R2 they sell the land in Georgia. The IL location can be expanded 2-3x current space. Also, with the carrot of GA they can get more concessions in IL to expand the GOAL of any company is to be profitable as soon as possible and unfortunately i don't think that includes any space in GA.

They are trying to figure a way out of GA and just don't want to say it until they have a finalized plan.
That's not accurate at all. They just launched a website indicating otherwise. There's no substituting Illinois with Georgia when it comes to labor laws and workforce availability. In general, people are raised here with an anti-union mentality and appreciate that Georgia is a right to work state. If Rivian could teleport it's Normal factory to Georgia at no cost, it'd be done.

The primary obstacle will be cost. The building in Georgia will happen when the bean counters give the green light.
