Maybe it's a laser based missile defense system to keep up with Cybertruck bulletproofing?

It would be cool if they could pass power through the mount itself and then through the T channel—eliminating need for wires. But weather proofing would be a challenge. Maybe light units with wireless remote switching, built-in internal packs and solar trickle charge?

The CT is apparently pre-wired for a lightbar which is cool.

Rivian should consider selling an accessory power module that can be activated through the screen, especially since they're aiming for the off-roading crowd.

Hummer EV is prewired for all this and the UI is designed to actuate the Aux stuff just like Jeeps do. It would be great to have power already run up there to not drill into the truck, can be done with simple snap contacts rather than a wire dongle.

Should we talk about the R?S picture in this patent:

Rivian R1T R1S Rivian Patents Crossbar Roof Light 1706564994882

Its super interesting that the headlights are smaller here than the R1T? I'd have thought nothing of it, but the timing of the R2S launch and the front end of this very different to the R1T in the same application makes me excited! :D

A powered crossbar connector opens up some very cool ideas (not least of which would be the aux lights here as well as the CHMSL for folks with a RTT on the rear). Hope it comes to fruition.

I'm normally the first in line to discourage reading into patent drawings, but... the headlines alone make this very interesting. (It also appears to be a full row shorter than the R1S.)

I wonder if they will go the “induction” route. Depends on the magnetic fields of the transformers.

I posted a while back that I wish the crossbars had electrical connection built into the feet when they connect to the the vehicle. Then the T-slots would connect the electrical lights that slide in. That was my wish - looks like that may actually be what they designed here. pretty cool...or did they read my post? :p

And I hope those electrical connections (if that's the plan) is somehow able to be retrofit.

Imagine how cool it would be to snap on/off lights and all sorts of powered accessories/toys by just unlatching the crossbars.
