Rivian AI 🤖 bugs

Hey folks, just wanted to kick off a thread on some bugs with the Rivian AI. I’ve noticed that it does not handle punctuation such as periods. Additionally, it’s not syncing my contacts and won’t find people in my contacts list. Anyone else with these issues?

I too have a weird contacts bug. It can’t find a contact that is listed in the phone app. Tried several times. Several people. I swear it worked the first day.

I've miraculously survived over three years with my R1T without any "assistance," so I'll be waiting until all the bugs are worked out before giving it a shot.

I love how people expect a product to be perfect right out of the box. Are you new to life on Earth? Nothing in the tech world works perfectly without some tweaking.

Yeah, people get exposure to frontier models and expect that to be the standard. That's not how it works. "Claude can do XYZ so why can't Rivian?"

Just guessing - it appears Rivian may be training their own model from the start, so those things that people already expect to be "baked in" (chat retention, punctuation, etc. etc.) because it's common in other AI, are not in the Rivan AI LLM. Rivian also wants this to run locally for basic Rivian commands, so building on some other foundation would be huge memory bloat and performance killer containing mostly useless tokens from RIvian's viewpoint.

I had a similar problem with syncing contacts. Toggling sync contacts in apps/Rivian Assistant/ settings--not Bluetooth settings--fixed it.

I would separate the model from the harness here.

Rivian absolutely should and does own the harness: vehicle state, command execution, safety boundaries, permissions, context, memory/chat retention, and the handoff between local and cloud paths. That is where Rivian-specific differentiation is.

But that does not mean Rivian should be training a base LLM from scratch. That seems unlikely, and probably not wise. The base LLM, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, punctuation, and general dictation behavior are areas where existing systems already have massive scale advantages. Rivian may end up fine-tuneing or distill models for their use, but that is very different from building everything from first principles.

So I would not read missing punctuation, chat retention, or contact lookup issues as evidence that Rivian is training its own model. Those are more likely harness and integration issues: transcription, context management, contact sync, entity resolution, or tool handoff. I'm not seeing anything yet to suggest there is something other than Gemini at the backend of all this (thats not a dig by any means - Gemini/Gemma is a great model series).

I synched my calendar (Cozi app) over to Google Calendar (using urls). But RA does not see those events through- do I need to mirror the calendars instead?

Unrelated, or maybe it is, but when I asked for information on a Finnish hockey player, half of the response was with a Finnish accent. I thought, "well, that's interesting!" When I asked for more information, half of that information was in actual Finnish, or at least, not in English! If I remember correctly, the change in accent/language was between sentences, or periods.
