Rear suspension leak

Not the only one dealing with this for sure… but getting an estimate for $1,800 from my local Rivian shop it’s not a easy pill to swallow. With about 58k miles on my R1T and out of warranty this is not a easy fix, and who knows if other sides start leaking. The 2nd gen seems to have an upgrade and they say there’s no more leaks, we’ll see about that in 3-5 years I guess. Surprised to see that it didn’t get to NHTSA with these leaks as the toe links issue. Any suggestions what route to take on this matter?

And not the first time it's discussed. This is why extended warrant is much discussed and recommended. Why would it involve NHTSA when it's wear and tear? Do you have proof it's due to manufacturing defect? Do you have proof that it's not because of wear and tear?

Toe link failure is practically a guaranteed accident. Complete air suspension failure is just a huge annoyance that makes the vehicle somewhat undrivable.

+1 extended warranty.

Anytime you buy an expensive vehicle (to fix), you either get out when the warranty expires or buy some additional coverage. Otherwise, prepare to deal with some significant bills.

Only gen1 quads. Everything else is 4y/50k

Yikes. I didn't realize it was only quad motors to 60k. I got mine fixed at 58k for free. I only have about 500 miles remaining. What expended warranty is the one to get? And how much are they?

Do your research. The available extended warranty is very unlikely to pay out more than you have to pay to buy it at this point....unless you just want one for peace of mind. Strictly financially you're better off sticking $5K (or whatever you want) into an HYSA as an emergency repair fund.

At 79k I needed all 4 dampers and my steering rack replaced. Estimate $12k. Extended warranty would have more than paid for itself in the first year.

Our '23 R1S had to have basically every part involved in the hydraulic part of the suspension replaced earlier this year. It was due to the fluid becoming contaminated from some part in the system failing, and releasing metal flakes. All under warranty.

Someone else who had something similar done outside of warranty, but slightly lesser, paid over $10k for it. Our service also included having the liftgate replaced because it was leaking inside the vehicle after a car wash. I wouldn't be surprised if the combined cost of my service here would have been 5 digits and started with a 2. It was their second attempt to fix this issue with the air suspension this month. It does all seem to be fine now though.

I'm probably planning on keeping that car after the warranty expires, but my '22 R1T is going back when my number for R2 is called. That being said, I'm definitely going to miss the auto-level feature that proved to be so useful for the rooftop tent and awning system on the R1.

A source said to me that they are working on "something very exciting". But not a word more. So, who knows. Maybe there will be some sort of RAD-edition R2 on steroids.

I've seen parts that don't match existing vehicles, and also don't match anything Rivian has teased on any vehicles so far. (and the Rivian part number on the parts doesn't exist on the internet either). If my read on those parts is correct, I'm really excited about what's coming down the pipeline.

It was just coincidental, my being at that facility had nothing to do with anything automotive.

Once the bumper to bumper warranty is done, the R1S Gen 2 gets dumped. I have 2.75yrs left.
Hopefully by then Tesla will have a CyberSUV based off the Cybertruck platform. Although the Model Y-L will be available in North America for sure by then and it's basically the same dimensions as the X. Another possible alternative.

I have a feeling the $4k I paid for each of my R1's ext wty will be a great investment. I'm keeping them for the long term as meet all of my needs in a vehicle.

Hell, my mom got over $10k out of hers on a Ford Escape (engine and transmission), her ext wty was only $2.2k so hard to get that return in the market.
