R2 Pet Mode Concerns From Owner's Test

My R2 seems to be functioning in PetMode the same as my R1. That is, if the cabin is at desired temp while driving then you arrive at a destination and turn on pet mode it then maintains that temperature.

Just curious, what was the external temp and what did you have pet mode set to?

the temps were around 80. I have not tried really hot temperatures.

here is a quick update after our R2 spending a couple of days @ the service center trying to understand the petmode overheating issue. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t as warm as it had been so it was not possible to completely replicate the issue. They did check the hvac system, diagnostics and checked with corporate on the issue. The HVAC system checked out fine - refrigerant charge to spec, no leaks, etc. They also compared the hvac results in the upper 70’s with broken clouds against another R2 awaiting delivery and both held very close to the set temp of 72 degrees. Finally then had is sit outside and ran petmode from 7pm to 3pm the next day when I picked the car. No issues. Finally they said there would be something (didn’t specify what) in the next software release to help with this issue so there must be some software contribution.

I had no issues with the temp on my 2 1/2 hour drive home so maybe it was just a inconsistent issue.

Attached are the energy screen if you are curious how much energy pet mode uses in about 20 hours while plugged into a Level 2 charger.

The second is the 70mph drive home (with a couple of short stops that lowered the avg speed). This is on 87 through the Adirondacks so some up and down elevation on the trip but temp and wind were ideal. Pretty happy with that efficiency with our 21” wheels.

3.2 is VERY solid at 70mph avg. Kyle just got 2.2 at 80mph constant. Drag hits like crazy in the R2 at higher speeds due to the box shape. Thanks for showing that!

PetMode Test
Very hot and humid today on July 26th. I did a side by side test of PetMode in my R1T and R2.

Test Details:
* Started at about 12:20 pm and ended at 1:20 pm in two stages.
* Stage 1: Inside a garage so the vehicles were in full shade. Temperature inside the garage around 83 deg F. I started the HVAC system and while in manual mode opened all the vents front and back, put the fan on Level 2 and set the desired temperature at 68 Degrees F and had recirc on. Was in this state for only a couple minutes then put vehicle in park, engaged PetMode with set point at 68 deg, excited the vehicle and locked the doors.
* Monitored the temperature displayed on the UI every 5 minutes for 1/2 hour.
* Stage 2. Backed the vehicle out of the garage into full sunshine with the outside temperature in the low 90's. Made sure PetMode was still engaged at 68 deg, excited the vehicle and locked the doors. Monitored cabin temp on the UI every 5 minutes for 1/2 hour.
* Both vehicles have black interiors and unshaded/untreated sunroof and windows.

Conclusion: Both vehicles kept the vehicle at or near the desired temperature in both stage 1 and stage 2 of the test. The R1 dropped the temperature faster and actually kept the cabin below the 68 deg set point.

While this test showed PetMode worked, please us the utmost of discretion in using the system to protect you pet. While it worked today, I personally would not rely on PetMode to keep my pet safe for a long period of time in direct sunshine and low 90 deg temps.

Good info, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen my car cabin sensor read in the 60s a single time.

Just curious if you start the test from the upper 70s outside rather than a completely pre cooled vehicle do you notice the A/C struggle? Also do you notice any differences between starting from auto low vs auto medium vs auto high?

WeLL, in this test the cabin started in the 80s as the vehicles were in the garage with the windows down for hours.

I don't actually use AUTO all that much. I'm a manual, do-it-myself kinda guy. But I do find AUTO works better with you enter a really hot cabin and want to drop the temp quick. Once it's down I usually switch back to manual as I find that to be quieter.
