Other than data gathering, I don't believe lidar provides any other benefit (in addition to auto driving, as you put it).
My gen 2 r1T (no lidar) will be capable of point to point driving (which i believe will be equivalent/similar to tesla fsd), at least according to Rivian.
Gotcha Thx. This would be my first EV. Tesla has cool tech but really loving the Rovian ethos so really excited to jump in. Although i prefer the r3 I think jumping on the r2 now would make sense and by the time r3 is up and running i can do that one.

If range is really that important to you, the BMW iX350 is an interesting competitor. Similar prices, more range, faster changing (which means zero to me)
Yeah, good point. Plus i have a BMW dealership about 5 minutes from me.

I want to stay with Rivian, but lets see.

Scroll down and you see this, bolding mine:

  • In addition to all Performance features, the limited edition Launch Package includes:
    • Autonomy+⁵ for lifetime of the vehicle
    • Special Rivian Green anodized Key Fob
    • Exclusive option of Launch Green exterior color (paid upgrade)
    • Tow package with 4,400-lbs of towing capacity
I see. Yes, you're right, that's what it seems to say. That contradicts the narrative of Launch being available in "one additional free color" that I read on 12 March, but perhaps I read someone else's conclusion rather than Rivian's statements.

Fortunately for me it doesn't matter either way. I spent too many years wearing that color, driving vehicles of that color, even eating food of that color - I have no desire whatsover to buy a car in that color or any other shade of grey.

Not really only because my R1T is paid for and not due for replacement anytime soon. Happy to see the company grow though.
Similar sentiment and situation, but would upgrade to TRIMAX with sub 3.0 speed, R2 UI upgrades, and easier size to park.

Got the source of the one free color? I’d be interested to see it.

I believe it was the Ars Technica article. And since it agreed with what Rivian did with the R1 I unquestioningly accepted that. Which violates my own rule about only relying on official information sources.

I still hope it happens that they make Launch Green a free color exclusive to the Launch Edition, but if I *expect* that to happen I will only have myself to blame.

100%
Between paying for launch color potentially and Rivian introducing another exclusive tire size for the 21” stock wheels (so expensive tires) I’m not that happy right now.

to your credit the Ars Technica article does talk about another optional body color and does say it’s included, just not that it’s Launch Green.

Gen 1 quad owners have already shared multiple sub 3s results with launch mode. I see no need to upgrade for sake of speed.

There is an absence of detail in all this. For example the tow package - with the R1 they simplified the a la carte options by introducing an off-road package that bundled the 20" wheels, the underbody shield, and a spare tire. And they moved to providing the tow hooks with all trims whether you wanted them or not. That simplified ordering and manufacturing, and I would have though they had learned from that. I would be surprised if they went back to a la carte and were selling the tow package without the 20" wheels (which have a higher load rating). But it's simply not clear from the press release. Is the tow package just the receiver? That alone doesn't seem to qualify as a "package".

The tow package is standard with the 21” wheels on performance with launch package. I agree with simplifying and leaning manufacturer but the people complain if their beloved option is not available yet.

good lord it's not about wanting LIDAR or not, it's about adopting the current Gen2 hardware platform TODAY and knowing it will be replaced by GEN3 hardware in 6 months. Ask anyone with a 2023/24 Gen1 vehicle what it's like being deprioritized for all updates and having to settle for scraps as software development and support charges forward with 90% of the focus on the new hardware platform. The question is whether you want an R2 badly enough RIGHT NOW to enjoy 6 months of updates and software fixes (which are particularly important for a launch edition vehicle) and then spending the remaining 4-5years of your financing plan or 2.5 years of your lease, just getting bare bones maintenance updates every month and watching the next generation receive the lions share of new feature and updates.
Lol.
It's practically guaranteed that Rivian already has been working on the beginnings of gen4 ADAS hardware.

I have a preorder deposit but honestly would wait until the lidar full self driving version.

Yes I can see RAP2 already being designed to follow on from their first chip and the learnings from that.
