No one plans their road trips from x% to negative 10% SOC. Range below 0% has some value for someone who is making it back alove from outback, but not for someone on a normal road trip. Who in their right mind would go 20 miles below zero, risking ending up on shoulder or worse.
In an area with low density of superchargers, I would recommend keeping some safeguards, such as not going below 30% SoC because when travelling on a long trip I often experienced some detour due to accidents or roadworks.

Yep, always plat to arrive at 10-15% soc minimum and be prepared for one charger being down. Everything breaks, so do chargers. If you are cutting close, slow down to the right lane speeds and switch to conserve. I skipped an extra stop doing this recently .

They probably didn’t fix the horrendous ergonomics but maybe someone tallish can comment. I’m only about 6’1” and I have to duck my head forward in this insane way to get into the R1 passenger seat. Then leg room is terrible because their dash design eats into it. Rivian is ok in the straight line contest but on so many basic aspects it’s hard to tell if they understand automotive functionality. Upgrade your seats with a better foam, etc. let’s not even get into “autonomy” now going into year 4 of vaporware and the lawyers smell blood in the water… if the R2 can’t match a 4 year old Ioniq 5 in leg room or “autonomy” I just don’t really know what Rivian’s been working on the last few years.
Im a tad under 6’10’’ and Im very comfortable in my R1S…

I am 6'5" with abnormally long legs, and the R2 is one of the most comfortable cars I have sat in. Both passenger and driver side. With the seat in a 6'5" driving position another person can comfortably sit behind me.
I'm 6'3", wife 5'11", one kid 6'4", another 6'2" - R2 actually fits four of us well which is remarkable. Can even add older sister 5'8" (usually away at school) in 2nd row middle if necessary.

That said, this will primarily be dad's local-ish commuter, we have Grand Highlander Hybrid for extended road trips.

There's been dyno validated tests that showed M3Ps losing power when under 75% and then another major loss at around 30%

https://www.mountainpassperformance.com/tesla-performance-model-3-dyno-testing-at-various-soc/
Oh, not saying it ain’t real Just I hadn’t experience it really.. have historically been able to maintain 65-70 easily at 5% and sometimes less..

But When I did 22 miles at 0%, I was purposely going 30 mph, not pressing anything, climate off and following a truck to get to an SC.

Agree, who charges 10-90? On my R1s anything over 70 is so slow that you’re better off getting back in the road and stopping again.
I have yet to need to stop at a level 3 charger on the road; with my R1T max pack, I just charge at home. However, there may be cases when on a road trip, I may want to charge to 90%+:
  • When in the boonies towing my Airstream -- range is decreased by half.
  • Sure, in CA, there are almost as many EV chargers as Starbucks, no so in the midwest. Especially true for RAN chargers, there could easily be 500+ miles between RAN chargers.
  • On an overnight road trip, it's nice to top off at a hotel, or during an extended dinner.

Just remember C&D extrapolates range in their tests which is why you see the car perform better than our test on 21” at 5mph higher speed

R2 loses range faster at low SoC which this test can’t account for.

It also can’t account for usable buffers below 0% which is partly how the Model Y with a huge buffer (also a problem) had such a big result compared to R2 in our test - are people actually going below 0% in real life? Probably not… but the car can do it so we run them until they die

We’ve run our tests the same for years and only because R2 underperformed everyone is upset haha

More info in this thread here:
Looks like C&D method is still very accurate given that 30 of the 40 mile difference is the beyond 0% which no one in the real world does, and we're left with the same 10 mile difference as C&D tested.

Sure, one just goes much further. Would it help if I put tape over the display?

In mixed driving, R2 has more range than MYP and less then MY LR. And it went 304 miles. They drive till indicated range drops to 10 miles and add it to the final number.

Mixed driving range is usually less interesting than highway range. Nobody worries about range when they are near home or in the city that they live in. In the end, if the highway range is within 20 miles of each other, I think it won't really affect useability. R2 is "good enough" to compete with MYP.

Not quiet. Most of my long drives are mixed. I am not travelling across state lines on freeway. I am travelling to/from a lake, a distant hike , a national park or something like that. All of these are more mixed driving than 80 mph freeway. Some freeway, but then you get on to national park and then it's an 8 hour loop.

If you are in Texas, all you do is interstate travel and don't go to national parks often 🤷. I haven't done one of those inter state drives after we had kids.

And R2P beat MYP in mixed. Not just match.
