I don’t care about waiting for Lidar, but I do care about waiting for Gen3 hardware. I’ve already seen them release features for only Gen2 and not Gen1, I don’t want to get a brand new R2 now and then in the not so distant future the newest features are only for the Gen3 model. It’s about compute for me and not self-driving, especially when better compute comes out in less than a year. If it was 2-3 years from now then that would be a different story.

My guess is R2 was originally supposed to be released with Gen3 and then they hit delays so they pivoted to releasing R2 with Gen2.5. Curious to hear others’ opinions.
The hardware you are talking about is for autonomy only. There won’t be hardware changes next year for infotainment, battery, motors, suspension, ultra wide band keyless operation, AI assistant etc.

I understand the fear of missing out, I think about it too, but the difference will be high level 2 (potentially 3 at some point) with current ADAS 2.0 and at some point undetermined and RJ predictions 2028-2032 for level 4 ADAS 3.0

Oh really? That potentially changes things. I was under the impression the RAP1 that replaces the current NVIDIA chip was used for infotainment compute too. If that’s not used for that, what is used for the infotainment compute?

I understand, but it has been clear in some communications that the infotainment chip stays the same. RAP1 (for those fearing to miss out I am sure RAP2 will be along in a few years!) is solely for autonomy.

My guess is they engineer with the platform they know/knew they could have at the target release to production date. And 2.5-4 years ago as the engineering, BOM, engineering, etc. were being started and written in pen for R2, and that was Gen2.5 core compute.

LiDAR is used to train the autonomous model of the entire fleet. It does not directly benefit models that have it enabled (our of it does, it's marginal).

There are a few interviews on YouTube with Rivian autonomy team stating this.

Although since I'm not an R1 owner, I should not be convincing y'all to get the LE... I want one!
I didn't think that's the implication or at least not the doesn't reason for eyes off.

The assumption from autonomy day was:

Lidar == eyes-off

It's not, "no eyes-off until lidar can train the fleet."

Interesting, thanks. I'm going to have to look into that again.

My understanding was that LiDAR would have to be equipped for Level 4 (drive itself without you), but not necessarily for Level 3 (autopilot with you in the seat). I'll look into it again though, because I could be mistaken/misremembering.

Although for me personally, that would not sway my decision.

Based on what I saw/heard at Autonomy Day, you are correct. Only L4 requires Lidar.

I am skeptical they will get to eyes off L3 without Lidar, but that is what was implied. Gen2 hardware is capable of point to point supervised. One day it might happen.

L3 will be hands off eyes on point to point (launch R2 and R1's capable). L4 will require LiDAR. RJ has stated in many interviews that L4 PTP no driver is very far down the road. Over 5 years out.
