Now if we could only get some pics of the underside of this beauty (the truck).

Without any apparent confirmation of what the off-road upgrade includes (other than the tow hooks), I've just got to assume it includes just a layer of plastic extending past the standard battery armor. Essentially, an almost pure profit option for Rivian. (Full disclosure: it is still part of my configuration.)
If the off-road upgrade ends up really being just some plastic covering the underside, it seems dirt, mud, and rock could get up above it and collect there. If so, and it's not easy to clean, I'll probably remove it --ending up with just two $1000 tow hooks.

in one of the pictures above you can see the added steel plating that's a protection skid plate. that's no thin plastic shielding.

Been busy the last few months. Thought I'd drop by rivian and have a chat. Seems it's the same old "we have no information" CS agents. I asked them what would happen to my delivery date (march/april) if I removed the off road package. Of course they don't know. They can't even ask someone about it, since I haven't been assigned a guide yet!

Then I asked them if I can see a R1T without the offroad package, and he directed me to the Venice Hub. I informed him that all the trucks there are WITH the offroad package. Then he told me I will get a test drive soon. I informed him I already had that and all the trucks there have the off road package.

Seems not much has changed, even though more trucks are out there.

Guess I have to spend the $2k, really don't want my delivery to move forward more.

FWIW, I don't currently have the off-road package configured and it didn't seem to impact my delivery window estimate relative to those in my region who do.

when is your delivery date and where? I'm in L.A with a march/april delivery date. Currently have the off road package configured. not sure what will happen if I remove it.

Now that body under shield is a separate option...if I remove it from my LE R1T, do I still get the silver bit on the front bumper (under the hooks)? Or does that just become black plastic....

I asked CS. She said that the front silver part would still be there, but in the car above without off-road pack, it's all black. At least hooks are standard with Adventure and LE.

Until we have pictures of delivered trucks with and without, I don't feel like we will truly know...we get a lot of contradictory answers from CS.

I stopped a rivian employee today driving a launch edition. We climbed under the truck and he showed me there are two carbon fiber panels that cover the gear box and drive unit between the wheels. Those two covers with the tow hooks are the off-road upgrade

I know carbon fiber ain't cheap, but that seems like a small amount of material for what they're asking.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea it was carbon fiber. I don't think carbon is a good material choice for a skid. I'm really hoping the aftermarket jumps all over this truck (if they haven't already) and offer some proper underbody protection.

the truck i test drove this week had tow hooks and a silver plastic skid plate. the drive specialist wasn't sure if that is standard or the off road upgraded skid plate-- i would assume standard?
Here’s a pic from the front where you can see a bit of the skid plate. I did get down there to look at it tho.

Yeah it doesn't seem right that it would be carbon fiber. From the pictures I've seen, it doesn't look like it would be too difficult for after market companies to fab a couple skid plates.

I agree $2k is steep for skid plates, but I’ve never seen a rivian w/o the tow hooks so I’m guessing they don’t have the other bumpers to install. Therefore, if I don’t go with the off-road package I’ll need to wait longer for those bumpers to show up

tow hooks are now standard on Launch Edition and Adventure.

I forgot about that. We will Se what happens to the configuration once the dust settles after this weeks shenanigans

There seems to be a difference in the new option for the Reinforced Underbody Protection from what I saw at the The First Mile Event in Normal. If I recall correctly, the panels looked more like plastic and were black. That maybe due to being a preproduction model. The picture in the configurator is a bright metal cover.
