I must say I am very disappointed they engineered the battery so it cant be serviced. So if one cell fails we have to replace the whole battery pack instead of the one cell that is bad. States need to pass tougher right to repair laws so we can repair these cars without spending an arm and a leg.

That’s the norm for every EV. Can’t just replace cells, might work for a little while but always causes major issues eventually. Pack balancing, internal cell resistance and such. Not to mention they’re all laser welded together inside potting foam, cooling dope, structural adhesive, etc. An EV battery pack isn’t like an iPhone.

Nobody is going to open up the battery to replace one of 775 cells. It's simply not important enough. There are more cells in there than the specified capacity. The servicable parts are all in the box sitting on the back of the battery. By building the battery this way, they are making the whole car more rigid, better able to take a hit from any direction and help the vehicle survive.

In the video they do state that they are very carefully and extensively testing cells so that replacement is not an issue. With an 8-year warranty on the battery, I'm not worried in the least. They've done the math.

I have an R1 and battery pack is not even one of the top 5 things that worry me. Battery packs are very reliable and have long warranty. More important thing is to bring sanity to Rivian repair costs, which might be the highest of any manufacturer at similar or higher price points, by a significant margin.
