So in your cas was it intermittent failure, or once it finally condensed and settled on the inverter, that was it, the main board was toast?
Intermittent. I would pull over and reset it and it would usually clear the fault. I had it in for service about a month after the first time I saw the error message. I don't really remember how many times I saw it.

I just had this error last night for the first time. Thanks for posting your experience. I didn't have to do a reset. Just got out of the car for 10 minutes or so.
I'll be bringing it in to Calgary service on the 26th. I have a passenger door that doesn't want to open below freezing temperatures. Feels like the switch might have moisture in it.

I'm dealing with this right now too. Yesterday, driving home from work on the highway received this error and pulled to the side of the highway. As I was on the phone with Rivian roadside assistance, I noticed the error had cleared after being in park. Decided to try to drive home. Made it another 5 minutes, and then it happened again. Pulled over again and did a restart as requested by Rivian roadside assistance. The error cleared again, and I was able to drive the remaining 10 minutes home. Rivian roadside assistance also had me do a sleep cycle when I got home.

Drove around a bit last night with no issues. This morning I drove to work (on the highway) with no issues. Thought I was in the clear.

Frustratingly, driving home tonight, at almost the exact same spot in the drive as yesterday, the error happened again. Was a but scarier this time since I also had my kids with me. Did a reset and it cleared the error, but Rivian wants to service the truck now. They are picking up the truck on Thursday. (I said that I did not feel safe driving it to the service center 1 hr away)

It's very cold here (between 0 and 10 F today). I asked roadside assistance if this was at least partially due to the cold. They said no, but I'm skeptical.

I love the truck, but this (and a few other service things) is very frustrating. I'm thankful that Rivian seems to be handling this one well so far. They set me up with a rental car near my house and are picking up the truck.

Hopefully they can identify the problem and easily fix it!

I had almost convinced my wife to get an R1S, but things like this keep her wanting a reliable ICE.
Welp, this happened to me AGAIN. Last year they ended up replacing the front drive unit. I hadn't had the issue again until tonight. For some reason, it was the exact same stretch of highway as the previous times. That's now 4 times I've gotten this error in 2 different vehicles (including a loaner) on the exact same two mile stretch of highway, all on days when it is extremely cold (~10*F today). It makes no sense to me.

I'm so frustrated.

Wow. Frustrating for you.
Rivian replaced my rear inverter and passenger door handle controller when I took it in for my issues. Our service center here in Calgary is fantastic. Always kept me updated and let me keep the R1S loaner for the whole time.

Very odd coincidence

Update: Rivian thinks it is an inverter (they didn't say front or rear).

For anyone who has had the inverter replaced for this, has the issue recurred?

Seems wild to me that a year ago it would be my front drive unit, and now it's an inverter. I'm not an engineer; is there something that could cause both of them to fail separately?

The inverters are attached to the motors. I believe "motor temp" is actually the inverter temp. They are basically cooled together. The inverter converts the DC battery power to 3 phase to run the motor and vice versa to regen. On some vehicles the motor inverter acts as the charger from AC for the battery. it can also deadlock to create heat to condition the battery.
