I think what I find upsetting about all this is how it points to Big Oil (and other fat cats in general) manipulating and controlling our allegedly democratic government.

I am not saying (necessarily) that Big Oil or Russia is in control of our fiscal, domestic or foreign policy, but it turns out that a lot of what our Government does makes a lot more sense if you assume that premise.

I now yield back the balance of my time to our corporate overlords.

No need to yield your time if you like to sponsor the whole site and salaries of the workers with say, 50 million dollors and or maybe a jumbo jet, we could yield our ethics and you could have the floor to do with asit benefits you.

There are references to Wind being cheaper than oil when all "the talking points" are considered. A serch will have them. Of course there are different studies, believe what you will.
There's a reason - actually several - that China is putting up wind turbines and solar farms at a furious pace rather than building new power generation plants based on fossil fuels. It probably isn't because their leadership is infected with woke ideology or even has any particular concerns about pollution and the global environment however.

Just curious how you know with such certainty what China is doing.

Not a single mention yet of a guy influential in the government at the time the funding was killed who happens to own a private charging network with which the new, state-sponsored chargers would compete.
Maybe it’s corruption, maybe it’s my faraday hat (Rivian owners go a step above using common kitchen materials for clothing)

I was not trying to imply certainty and am sorry if my post gave that impression.

That said, it is actually is pretty certain that China has, and continues to, install far more wind turbines and solar panels than any other country. A January article in Forbes said in part "As a matter of fact, China has more wind and solar capacity than any other country in the world with twice as much capacity under construction than the rest of the world combined. " There are of course myriad other popular press articles, and more than a few peer-reviewed studies that come to a similar conclusion.

The "several reasons" that I suggested for this move toward solar and wind may include things like government initiatives and investment, production over-capacity and other economic reasons, chiefly their lower cost. The post that I was responding to referenced the likely lower cost of alternative energy from wind and solar, and this was an attempt to second that. It seems to have failed in that however.

My post said also that the reason for China's move towards solar and wind power was "probably" not because their Communist Party leaders are "infected with woke ideology", which was intended to be sarcastic, not to be certain. I'm sorry if that was the impression given. I'll add that the "probably" was also intended to cover China's concern, or rather their lack of such, for environmental issues. While this too was intended to be sarcastic and not really certain, given China's record on environmental issues, you could make a good argument for the latter.

I probably should just have posted that I believe that China is a country that has lax environmental rules, an authoritarian government that is primarily interested in global economic domination and is generally unconcerned with the welfare of it's citizens, has a massive and growing need for electric power that is increasingly being met through wind and solar power because they are easier, faster and less expensive than building, maintaining and supplying fossil fuel power plants.

Edit: I should also have added my apologies to the OP for the partial hijack of his thread.

"The end justifies the means" Why they lead the Alternate power growth is possibly many reasons, the result is the same, progress.

My Chinese is rusty but I'm pretty sure there is an equivalent of "don't shit where you sleep/eat" in Mandarin or any of the 300+ other dialects. While that may not be the primary driver for their pivot to "green" energy, you can bet that is one of them. Until 2023, it was the most populous nation in the world (surpassed by India). Right along with their plan to industrialize and become a global power, they've also aimed to become more self-reliant. Now, decades later, the world goes to them for batteries, solar and just about anything that needs to be processed and manufactured. And they understand they can't shit where they eat/sleep by polluting their own "home" with industrial emissions from all that manufacturing activity. Healthcare over there is also provided by the state. And with declining birth rates (like most other developed nations) that very large population is getting older and older. Thus, placing greater demand on the healthcare system. And that in turn force the policy makers to be more conscious about their management of health and environmental issues. Online, I see lots of people having very out-date ideas about China and still think of it as a developing nation. And this is very odd because it only takes a second to query images of well known cities. They look like any other major city of "developed" nations. And getting back on "don't shit where you sleep/eat", we don't seem to understand that simple idea here in the US right now. Or just don't care because any transaction that gets one richer is deemed more important than anything else.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck

Not too long ago, Chinese companies would make anything no matter what the environmental or social cost. A lot of Americans have a view colored by that not so distant past. Interestingly, Americans watched the fallout of that and have seemed to have learned only the lesson that “it made China a global economic powerhouse”.

Exactly why we need to stop burning oil for light duty transportation and power generation (small). Need the oil for other products, not combustion.
This is exactly the way. We do we have to go to 0 oil use? We can always use some dirty tech. But why use it to drive to the grocery?

The best way to kill progress is to insist on 100% of a switch to something new. Encourage shifting some/most use, not all. We drive 30k miles a year. 27k are electric, powered by solar. The rest is ICE. Tell me I have to pick one and I have to go back to ICE….
