Keeping my GEN one R1S for as long as I possibly can. And then looking forward to calling a GEN seven R2 autonomous vehicle to take me where I need to be when I’m too old to drive.

That was the plan when I made the reservation, but seeing them go down the same path they did with the Gen 1 R1 I have no interest in being the one left holding the bag again with this half-baked in between 2026 R2. Once they do the gen 2 "re-launch edition" like they did with R1 in 27 or 28, with the autonomy chip and lidar and fixed door handles and whatever else isn't fully baked yet I'll definitely reconsider because the R1 is too big for the city and I don't actually use the air suspension but once or twice a year.
The R2 from June is not half baked. The only change early next year is lidar and RAP1 chip which is focused solely on autonomy. Everything else stays the same - infotainment, batteries, motors, overall design etc.
Also L4 autonomy (which is what the RAP1 is for) is, by RJs own words in recent interviews, late 2020s to early 2030s.

Trading 2023 R1S for an R2 as soon as it's available.

Major driver is out of warranty repair costs for R1 but I also prefer the size of the R2 and don't really "need" the 3rd row.

I'll trade my R1T for a R2 once there is a R2T.

I'll get a R3X when they come out and keep my R1T.

I keep considering trading in my Gen 1 R1S for a R2. My main reason is because I do not need a 3 row SUV.
Definitely trading in R1S for an R2 as soon as my reservation comes up. I really only leased the R1S to move up the list for R2. Don’t care about LIDAR as it won’t add any capability. The RAP processor would be nice but no benefits from that until several years out.

If I wanted a reliable, refined vehicle that wasn’t annoying I wouldn’t own a Rivian at all. I prefer my half baked cars to have 1000hp.

The original plan in our household was for my wife to trade in her Gen 1 Quad R1S for the R2. She historically has preferred a smaller vehicle.

However, she’s leaning towards keeping the R1S. She’s used to the larger vehicle by now. We have used the 3rd row on a few occasions. There are features we’d miss such as the air compressor, powered frunk, and air suspension.

The Gen 1 Quad R1S is still an absolute beast. My wife doesn’t care about autonomy features. She never uses them. The only thing we’d both really like improved are already in the Gen 2’s - higher resolution cameras and electrochromatic roof.

We’ll still look at the R2 (and the BMW iX3) Perhaps she’ll be reminded of the preference for a smaller vehicle after a test drive, but as of now, we’re leaning towards no on R2. Feels like a downgrade - although we reserve the right to change our mind after a test drive.

Aside from perhaps autonomy, it would be a step down in capability at an additional cost. (And not the pickup I need.)

Have the rez in case my wife or a family member wants to make the jump, but it looks like no takers at this point.
Same. And we currently have a T and an S

Also, the Gen1-er is thinking of an R2 lease.

I suffer from Gen1 ADAS Abandonment Syndrome- G1AAS
I'm sure you already know but if that's your major complaint then it would make sense to consider the comma four which would be a drastic improvement over the stock garbage they gave us.

Was going to wait for the R2 and trade in my Model Y. Ended up finding a great deal on a ~22k 2023 gen 1 R1T dual large pack and jumped on it. Unless I can convince my wife to make the switch to full electric for her car I won't be getting the R2 and will have to live vicariously through you all. I'm one of three close friends that have or will be trading in their Model Y's for a Rivian and the R2 feels like a huge milestone.

Similar situation here; I'm not sure I'm ready to give up truck features, and that amazing air suspension, but the operable rear window convinced me to put in a day 2 reservation. I won't be purchasing it sight unseen because I'm already driving a truck I love, but it's compelling enough that I will test drive it when they have R2s in the showroom.
Glad to hear someone's is amazing. My suspension on my early R1 is dog****. So moving to R2 asap.

My suspension in gen 2 is also one of my biggest complaints. Clunky, constantly adjusting at stops, takes forever to kneel, sometimes just doesn't kneel. I imagine it will be very costly to maintain and repair, so I'll be happy to have something basic

I’ve seen a few people mention trading their leased vehicle for an R2? Rivian doesn’t do this right? Or Chase Bank rather? You’d have to pay off the lease early right, with a massive penalty? Interested because I’m in the same boat. Needed a vehicle asap, so bought an R1 even though I knew R2 was the better vehicle for me.

Yes Chase will allow you to trade in a lease early. There will be some fees for early termination but you don’t have to pay off the balance of the lease. At least that is my understanding but I haven’t researched it thoroughly yet.

The only change they've admitted is lidar and RAP1. Look at how much changed with R1 gen 2 - cameras, computers, matrix headlights, UWB keys, heat pump, the whole suspension, etc. and they didn't hint at any of that until it was ready to go to market despite that kind of redesign taking years of development on the back-end. What have they done to earn your blind faith in this regard?

I suspect at least that the door handles will be fixed in the gen 2. With China banning electric handles Europe is sure to follow, and Tesla has already switched to a dual-action mechanical handle in their robotaxi prototype which means it's likely to come through to 3 and Y sooner rather than later. Rivian surely sees the writing on the wall, and Wassym let it slip at one point that they're "working on it" yet the launch edition has the same setup as the gen 2 R1. I at least sure hope they do...

Add to that the EPA certification documents indicating the launch edition wouldn't get the redesigned heat pump right away - that wasn't a "misprint", at best it was just outdated information and they've gotten the heat pump squared away in time after all, but it still points to the fact that the gen 1 R2 is a bit of a trial run that they're figuring out on the fly, same as the gen 1 R1.

That shouldn't really be so contentious, given it's a new model on a new line that won't even be produced for a full year before it's superseded. Everything improves over time and "buy it for what it can do today" etc. etc. and I think the launch edition will still be a great car, but I also think you'd be foolish to trade down from an R1 for a three-quarters-baked launch edition.
