Is anyone else very confused by this Color, Material, Finish display?

What is the purpose? What is going on here? Is it just to show the interior color swatches? Were they giving away these items? Did customers bring in these items? Or is the best a multi-billion dollar company can do is putting random items on a table? This is acceptable and expected and SOP during the concept and design phase of a project. But we are well beyond that. Rivian needs to be showing the actual product and colors, not where the inspiration came from. Pre-holders have all already chosen their interiors. These interior colors were announced long ago. At this point, displays that are not of the product itself are disappointing to say the least. We are weeks away from deliveries, and months beyond when the were originally supposed to be delivered, and the only information we are getting is a leaked photo of where the color and finish inspiration came from? And before someone mentions "chip shortages"....ask yourself how long ago these colors were announced, and if you think chip shortages has anything to do with Rivian not releasing any information on actual product colors.

The fact that they even had this basic of a display at their premier marketing event of the entire year is pretty embarrassing.

It looks like people grabbed random stuff from their offices the day before and put it neatly on a table...because they had nothing else to show their pre-holders weeks before launch. This is like a second grade project learning colors "okay everyone, go home and bring me back something that is similar to this color...*holds up green swatch*"

Some of the random items on the table include: paddle board fin, green water bottle, gray bike seat, Fox and Yakima stickers, two iPhone cases, wooden novelty pencils, more random stickers and patches, a black carabiner with blue clip, a literal stick, a lunch box, magazines, a polaroid of someone's bike, a tin cup, rope, a toothbrush?, and many more random items.

Seriously, what is going on? This looks like it was prepared in 24 hours. I think what happened is RJ came in the day before and all they had was the color samples on the table and it looked empty and bland. He told them to do something about it, and someone had the last minute idea to tell every employee to go home and bring back outdoor things of similar colors. And they put the best items on a table.

I don't know what's worse...the above scenario, or the scenario they want us to believe-that the inspiration of the interior colors came from someone's lunch box, a FOX sticker, a random iphone case, and someone's toothbrush....And that they think this is worth showing off on display at the largest marketing event of the year.

Even if you don't think this display is comparative to a second grade color-learning project and is somehow worthy of a multi-billion dollar company, you should still understand that at this point (weeks away from production), having a display like this at an exclusive marketing event, is sub-par and borderline comical. A VERY BASIC CMF display like this is something that should have been done and would be acceptable 1-3 years ago. During the design and concept phases...when they are actually looking for and gathering inspiration for the colors. And is something you show when you release the colors for the first time.
These colors have been known and decided for quite some time now. Your customers have literally already decided on and placed orders for these colors. At this point, customers and preholders don't care that the inspiration for the interior color or finish came from a random toothbrush....they care about what the color actually looks like and the delivery of the product. Yet, Rivian isn't even showing that. All we get, is some "leaked" photos of a basic CMF inspiration display posted on a forum. Anything short of high quality 3D virtual tour of the vehicle is an failure. But, hey, even a display of a vehicle seat fitted with each interior color would be better than this CMF table. Is Rivian and its billions not capable of something that basic? Or do they just not care about their customers and only care about their billion dollar customers like Amazon?

I was all set to rip on the OP for focussing on something so small.

Then I zoomed up on the table and saw a SUP fin and a bicycle seat. Whoever got tasked with that table in the marketing department either phoned it in or missed the demographic. That said … who cares - as long as the truck delivers the way we all hope it will. For the record my confidence level is high, and although I’m not a LE holder I’m certain disappointment isn’t going to be a common emotion when you LE holders take possession ???

It seems the photo is representative of the activities expected of owners of an adventure vehicle. The familiar everyday items of an active life displayed and catalogued just before they go into the gear tunnel. I always take color swatches with me on hikes for coasters.

These forums have a lot of great people in them and I’m thankful for those people, but mixed into the community are some of the most impatient adult men I’ve ever encountered in my life lol. Relax buddy, we’re just buying trucks.

I don't think this event was a "big thing" for Rivian in the production and display sense. This wasn't a major marketing event trying to wow people by the style, capability and refinement of the vehicles, but rather a small intimate meeting with early preoorder holders to get their hands on the wheel.

The driving was the big deal... Not the color swatches and table display.

I bet there will be a big formal and polished event once they open the first Rivian show room. There you'll find what you'd come to expect when at your local Tesla showroom... But cooler and better, because it's Rivian ? !

I'd love to attend that event!

I was also a little annoyed with the display. I think the display is cool in that it helps provide context to see the colors together, relative to one another, as well as with some trinkets that help convey the color; it is an interesting dealership/service-center/etc. installation.

But that said, there's absolutely no reason for there not to be promotional photos and videos of every color with proper lighting and color correction. Rivian leaving something as important as color up to the imagination with little more than compressed, off-color, phone-captured images from outsiders on instagram is pretty ridiculous.
That is all I'm trying to bring attention to. The fact that Rivian is "getting by" with a display like this, this close to delivery, to demonstrate their colors is unacceptable. If they released other photos/videos/displays with their colors, that would be a different story.
They don't even have a display with the colors/paint on the actual materials of the vehicle. In fact, I don't think Rivian has officially released anything related to colors with color samples or detailed photos.
I don't mind the CMF display table. I don't. It looks "cool". But I don't want to make a decision as important as interior and exterior color based on an unofficial, technically "leaked", cool looking display table. And the fact is, Rivian isn't providing much more information, so something like this is all we have to go on. We have never before seen an official, production quality, photo of the interior wood trim like this photo shows. This is the best we have. And my hyperbole is that it is comparable to a sh*tty 3rd grade project and totally unacceptable for a multi-billion dollar company.

I highly encourage you to do a refund if you did a reservation. You don't want to be a fool like the rest of us.

I agree with everything he/she said. Why does everyone get their feelings hurt when someone complains about something? That's worse than the complaint itself, which I found pretty funny. The table was pretty lame, but I'm not taking my ball home or canceling my order.

It isn't the complaining, it's the vehemence of the complaining.
