It’s plastic. It provides zero security.
Agreed that it definitely won’t stop a smash ‘n grab. But it might stop a nosy valet or mechanic from riffling through there.

I reported to Rivian multiple times about the button clicking but not opening. In interaction design, a click is used to provide feedback to the user that the command was received and registered. The unit should not be able to respond until it clicks, and the unit should only respond when it clicks.

This is a huge defect with the button. Rivian ignores the issue every time I reported it and said it is consistent with other vehicles. They fail to ignore that consistently with other vehicles doesn't mean it is working correctly. A manufacturing defect for this button is a systematic issue and they think that because all their vehicles have this defect that it is not a manufacturing flaw. No product designer would intentionally design a button that provides feedback only sometimes.

Imagine typing on a keyboard that would only register your keystrokes some of the time, or register your keystrokes and the key doesn't click sometimes. Obviously a defect that nobody at Rivian wants to acknowledge.

We need valet mode and PIN lockable storage. This feature will make sense then. For now, it’s annoying

Never had issues opening it. Maybe I’m not understanding the issue

A dumb overly complex design in my opinion but typical of EVs. A simple mechanical latch and a door that opened as one piece to the rear would be cheaper, more reliable and provide better access to the space.

So my reply was “I have a feeling it will be a future feature to lock in for valet” and your reply is “it provides zero security?”

tell me where you go for valet service, I will make sure I don’t go there. If your valet has a habit of breaking through your plastic locks you probably don’t want to go there.

My point is that anyone rude enough to would rifle through your bin wouldn’t be stopped by the valet pin.

but yes, I don’t like to valet anywhere. Sometimes it’s necessary…. But I don’t like it. The number of respectful valets are near zero, imo. Even though most probably don’t rifle through my stuff, I find they leave keys in vehicles and leave vehicles unlocked all the time, and that bothers me.

Was involved in an accident. Vehicle lost power and the main battery died and the 12V died while they were taking care of us. No power, no access to the center console where things like insurance docs were located.

If the are going to do this, it needs to move to an open state when the vehicle is in an accident.

Ouch. It just seems like over and over again Rivian shoots itself in the foot with needless complexity.

FWIW, they replaced my center console cover during my last service visit. Wasn't even a ticket, it's something they know about. Working much better now.

Older topic, my apologies...

My 2024 R1S is completely aggravating for opening the center console.

Parked, driving, etc.. It wont open until I press on the button 20-30 times. I have heard it open the latch a couple times, and not actually open the console lid.

The only thing that seems to work sometimes is to press the button, and slide my finger across the button. But as I said, it only works sometimes.

Is this still an issue for any one else currently?

I've suggested "PIN to Start" to Rivian several times via email.. they keep saying "great idea" but it's been over a year since my lest email to them.. they do what they want to do. I think the suggestion emails go straight to Trash.
