Hello all,

I am concerned about my recent R1S dual motor large pack order. How does the large pack get me 330 miles of range when the pack is only 109.4kwh. How did the efficiency between the gen 1 rigs and gen 2 rigs change so much? The large pack in the gen 2 rigs is significantly smaller than the pack in gen 1 rigs but only lost about 10 miles of range (based on the 22" wheel size)? Is the gen 2 R1S really getting 3m/kwh or am I going to find out on my first drive that I won't be getting anywhere near that kind of range. I would be frustrated to say the least....
Also, the math between the small and large pack doesn't add up. The difference in pack size is about 16.9kwr right? How does that difference get me another 70miles....

I know they added the heat pump but that should only really make a difference in winter right?

I attached pictures of the battery pack sizes for the first and second gen rigs.

Can someone make sense of this for me?

Also have a Gen 2 DM large on order and have thought about this. Curious to what everyone's thoughts are

I am glad I am not the only one thinking about this. I have called and emailed rivian about this very question and they have yet to respond.... "We will have someone get back to you soon."

I have read through that thread. It just didn't really answer my questions on range and efficiency....
How does 109.4kwh get me 330 miles of range?

330/109.4 = 3. 02 mi/kWh.

My Mach-e GT: 270/91 = 2.97 mi/kWh.

Somehow the R1 is more efficient than my much smaller and more aerodynamic Mach-e. Amazing!

I also think this seems a little too good to be true.

I agree. I owned a Mach-e and it struggled to get that efficiency....

That's why this makes no sense to me.

Has anyone out there taken delivery of a second gen R1S with a dual motor that can shed some light on this?

The only speculation I could come up with is that the new wheels+tires might be making part of the difference.

Curious about this and been thinking the same. Wheels/tires were the only difference in the Mach-e California Route 1 model to get its range up.

I thought about that too, but the 22s are the same. Could a tire make that big of a difference? It's still the same size tire on the 22" wheel right?

The current range is a theoretical calculation, much like Tesla. Unfortunately, I think the Gen 2 will have a hard time meeting the range.

I suspect they have something like an Octo valve from Telsa for the pack and space conditioning. Also reduction in wiring and pack design can increase transmission performance. No one has confirmed specifically how the efficiency improved so much.

For comparison sake with the Mach-e:
2022 Premium AWD - 277 mi
2022 CA RT1 AWD (only wheels/tires different) - 312 mi

An increase of 35 miles (12.6%) just from that.

That's definitely a difference. 35 miles is a lot, but the 22" wheels are the same... So just the tire brand makes up for 21.6kwh of battery?

Just crazy....

Hopefully I will get a call from Rivian tomorrow. But if I do, they probably won't be able to give me any information.... ha

I forget which (maybe OOS), but in one of the videos on Gen 2 there was mention that the new 22’s were lighter. But yeah, all speculation at this point. Will be curious what you can learn tomorrow and to see efficiency tests once there are more deliveries.

I am in the market for the same and skeptical about the range protection of large pack. If they were able to magically squeeze our 3+ miles/kWh on the large pack, how come the max pack is still at 141 kWH, they didn’t make it smaller say 135kWH ? Afraid of Tesla “miles”. - vapourware.
