I think that is where Rivian is missing the mark with the higher prices.

They need volume to spread the fixed cost across more sessions. That also will get more people used to visiting their locations keeping them busy as they build out.

The RAN will be a loss leader until it is built out, the trick is to find a sweet spot for the cost that will entice usage in order to minimize the losses.

Without competitive prices I think they will lose more money because of low usage numbers causing a very high percent of the unit cost to be consumed by the fixed costs.
This is why they should open all of their chargers to everyone, the old ones could be initiated via the Rivian app.

At Kingman and Quartzsite in AZ, Rivian has 6 chargers at each of the sites. EA has 4 chargers with long lines. Tesla has large sites at these, but they are slow for 800V vehicles. The Rivian chargers have been mostly empty (1-2) when I have charged at those sites.

I am willing to pay more to avoid the lines, and to avoid taking up two SC spaces.

I actually like the fact that people are avoiding RAN because of the cost. It means I can be fairly confident I will get to charge my truck without waiting. And RAN chargers are fast.

R1T in 2023 ?
…
I'm just wondering if the Rivian owners are still using RAN for roadtrips because the most I have seen on this trip was one R1 at each RAN.
I skipped RAN entirely last week. RAN is more expensive than Tesla superchargers.

I’ll be willing to pay in this situation… but not if/when Tesla is more readily available.

Heck no (but I'd have to find one first not to use it). BTW - iONNA and the EA chargers are at good locations for me in AZ, and I only charge for 10 mins to get me to a home charger when on trips.

I am on a road trip from S.F. Bay Area, to L.A. to Phoenix, and back to L.A. My first two charges were at a RAN at $0.6x/KW; and then I only used Tesla charging stations at $o.5x the rest of the way due to convenient and price differences.

I'm just wondering if the Rivian owners are still using RAN for roadtrips because the most I have seen on this trip was one R1 at each RAN.
Yeah, they’re always fast and reliable… plus the vehicle fits in the parking spot correctly.

With Ionna and Walmart installing DCFC networks, Rivian may want to get out of the charging business. No longer needed for them to grow. DCFC is all about spreading demand charges over a large number of charging sessions.
