Anyone considering trading their R1T for an LE R2?

Honestly tempted to trade my wife's R1S once the warranty runs out, but we still use the third row pretty extensively so not sure how realistic that's going to be.

Definitely my question as well. Probably won’t get an actual answer until June.
My guess is they won't do the trade. They'll probably recommend lease with intent to buy on the R2, plus you selling the Tri R1T on your own.

Yeah, sadly no leasing in Maine for Rivian. But yeah, no real issue for me, just curious given the priority status owners will supposedly get in their R2 orders and whether that will actually translate to many trade-ins.

It's an odd question, IMHO. Would make more sense to possibly trade R1S to R2S. R1T is a pickup and has some unique features vs the S and vice versa. Not to mention the R2 is a bit smaller.
This reminds me of the arguments about what people cross-shop.

I traded my Mach-e to Rivian for my R1T Tri Max. Is that odd? It isn't any more or less odd than trading in a R1T for a R2. People cross-shop vastly different vehicles all the time. It isn't odd. It's normal.

Yes, but it's still a business seeking to be profitable/sustainable. IMO, Rivian should be a lot more careful with use of word "priority". They seem to not have learned. We already know employees get first dibs. And then there are influencers and anyone else with employee connection who can jump ahead. How is it "priority" when you're 3rd or 4th lot in line? and even within the lot there are those ahead of you.

I'm certainly planning on trading in my R1S for R2. I only got the R1S as a placeholder for R2

Is it an odd question? Let's play with it and see. " "Would you trade your F-150 for an Escape? Would you trade your Silverado for an Equinox?" If those seem odd to you, perhaps it's because those generally are two different customers with two different use-cases.

Those who need a truck need a truck, those who don't need a truck don't need a truck.

Not everyone who has a truck needs a truck. So those that don't need a truck, but who could better use an SUV instead might.

I need a truck, but if I had to part with my R1T, the next best Rivian substitute for my needs would be an R1S.

The only R2 vehicle I would trade my R1T for would be a R2T. I actually do truck stuff with Arty that a SUV would struggle to do.
Same here. If I'm going to daily a truck, I'd like it to be smaller.

I guess I qualify as a weird cross shopper as well in that I'm likely replacing the R1T next year with a Mini Cooper SE and another Ridgeline. I really like the Slate, but buying from a new automaker again is a bitter pill to swallow twice.

Yeah I think so. The R1T was always bigger than I prefer. The R2 is what drew me to Rivian, but then I got so into the company I had to have one asap. The 3 row R1S felt a bit too over the top for a single guy living downtown, so went with the T. I don’t have a big need for the truck though. Never in a million years thought I’d own a pickup, but I love my R1T.

I’m assuming the R2 Performance is going to be the most fun to drive Rivian and super tossable, and I’m really looking forward to that though.

From a Tri? Nah. I don't see any tangible benefits outside of reliability concerns of the R1T and potentially better handling of the R2. You got range, powered trunk, gear tunnel, ascend interior, etc.

Coming from a Gen 1? Then I'd see the argument. I have an LE R1S and am considering going to a LE R2. I rarely used the third row and the updates in ADAS and camera quality alone seem worth to me for a much more attainable price. My wife has new Model Y performance and I really like the size of that thing. So much so that I went from comfortably passing on the R2 to putting a reservation down for one. A Rivian of that size must be a blast and all reviews point to this as well. I actually like the way the R1 drives but there is no denying that it's a boat. At over 2,000 lbs less, I am so excited to see what an R2 can do.

I'm considering exactly this- here's why:

I always drove pickup trucks and so the R1T was the natural choice in 2024 when I purchased my R1T. However I've discovered the cabin space and the bed space is really too small to be functional for what I use a truck for. I knew that this was a possibility going into the purchase, and even though the utility to do 'truck stuff' isn't there for me, I've fallen in love with driving this vehicle due to the tech, driving dynamics, and just the nature of driving EV.

So I fixed my truck problem and bought a full size diesel truck in the fall to take care of my 'truck needs.' That leaves me with the opportunity to swap my R1T with another EV for daily driving- basically anything I do not need my full sized truck for. Short list is model 3, Y, and R2.

and the S can do 7700# so could always use that if we ever pursued one of the fancy EV campers (~7000#). Hmm…
7700# / 7000# is too close to the limit for my comfort level. Especially after you factor in food, clothes, and all the other general "crap" that gets tossed into a camper. You're going to be limiting yourself to only the smallest (e.g.: Pebble, not Lightship or Evotrex-class trailers) and could very easily to be over your capacity. Just imo.

I am seriously thinking of trading my 24 R1T for the R2 launch edition, launch green, but would like to at least see one in person and sit in it. I had a 22 R1T Launch Edition that my son in Chicago has now. I thought it would have been better to wait for the smaller R2 for him to buy vs him buying my 22 R1T off me, but he is 6'7" and getting into vehicles that would sit lower may not be ideal for him, plus he really wanted it for the Meridien stereo! For me, i'm debating on how much more of the clunks and rattles i want to deal with on the R1T Gen 1 (without the new front subframe that they put on my old 22 R1T). I'm about to retire and was planning on cross country trip with RTT through national parks in the R1T, but that may depend on timing of when a R2 will be available. I will miss camp mode in the R1T though as it's not often a campsite is perfectly level and without air suspension in R2, choosing how to level the R2 so the tent is level will be fun.

I'd kill for an R2T, but the lease on my '23 R1T is coming up soon and they're not letting new Ts out the door for $850 a month anymore, so I'm looking pretty seriously at an R2, at least for the next few years. Will probably trade that one back in for whatever truck they're making at the end of the next lease, tho.

Yeah, at the end of the day, it would have to be such a great deal for me to consider it. I highly doubt I will, while minor, I hated the spring close on my former MYLR in the winter of Maine, so I don’t think I could give that up. While it feels like the closely rear window opening could accommodate some of my truck operations, it would get very messy, very fast.
