So many people reference this and I guess at the root of the statement it is accurate that they have zero experience.

My take is that as a company yes but I am sure they have assembled a team that has a lot of experience doing this. As long as the assembled team is allowed to do what they know how to do without undue influence by people that think they know better, I see no reason they can not be very proficient at ramping up at a decent rate.

Now about that supply chain.... :-(
I agree that Rivian has hired experienced folks but in my experience it takes work and time to get individuals working as a team. There are also a fair amount of inexperienced folks that need to come up the learning curve.

I have several HVM semiconductor start up experiences and it takes 6-18 months for the entire system to mature to point of being productive. Everyone from the building and equipment maintenance folks to the engineers to the supply chain to the quality control to legal to management to vendors to logistics
has to learn what to do and how to work with each other.

Most of the learning and team building cannot happen until the crank is turned hard day in and day out. Keep in mind that Rivian is still about 1500 folks short of a full team.

I've mentioned this before, but it's still relevant... I placed a Model 3 reservation deposit literally in the first 10 minutes of that being available and was definitely in the first 10% of preorders placed that night, let alone over the months before deliveries. By the time I was given the opportunity to place an order with my reservation, literally anybody in the US could do so, reservation or not. It would be hard for Rivian to handle the reservations as badly as Tesla did.
Same, people were ordering the Model Y and getting deliveries within weeks where I had been waiting 16 months at that point. Lesson learned there.

My chat with Rivian on 9/23/21 indicated end of 2022 for all LEs to be delivered and that my Guide for my non-LE R1T would not be contacting me until end of 2022 or sometime in 2023.

I am not sure what the lead time is after Guide contact. I assume its 2-4 months.

I pre-ordered the R1S in August, however, if my delivery is going to be in 2023, I will be considering my options regarding the competition which will offer similar range and (on-road) performance, if they have a better delivery estimate.

I am keeping my existing SUV limping along (for 12+ years) and it is time to upgrade.

I wanted to confirm your statement (not doubting your word, but verifying what is on their website), so I asked the CS representative this morning. My chat said all LE's would be delivered by Spring 2022. I asked if it was the 1st of Spring, or throughout Spring. He said it was sometime in the Spring months.

When he said R1T's are hitting the road now, he wouldn't confirm if deliveries have already been made. I personally don't think so. With all the unknown information, I don't see how anyone can order, unless you have a pocketful of money, that's burning a hole in your pants. I'm not in that position. ?

The main reason I chatted, was to find out if there will be normal (standard) cruise control, in addition to Adaptive Cruise Control. He couldn't confirm it. I also asked if Rivian would have Speed Limit Sign Recognition, which he also couldn't confirm. Both features are available on a different brand vehicle. The Speed Limit Sign Recognition can be used with cruise control, where the vehicle will automatically adjust its speed according to the posted speed limit. You can also adjust the mph, higher or lower, above the posted speed. Not having either of these could end up being a problem for me. I certainly hope not, after waiting over 2-1/2 years.

I selected the button to download chat, but nothing happened, so I took a couple of screenshots.

I wish I had taken screenshots of my chat. It is possible that I miss interpreted or miss remembered what was said regarding LEs. My apology.

I am sure that they said my R1T (3/20/2021) Guide will probably not contact me before end of 2022 or sometime in 2023. That I am sure of. It was their way of saying don’t sweat the details regarding potential delivery delay due to location as your R1T is a long way off. I am paraphrasing and I don’t think the chat person fully realized what was communicated.

No apology necessary. ? I think it's entirely possible you didn't misinterpret. I've got so much time already invested in this purchase, there's no way I can invest another potential 6 months waiting, so I wanted to verify for myself. Good luck with your order. I hope they get production underway well enough, to where your wait won't be nearly as long as mine.

I’m sure you are not alone. There are some tasty offerings on the horizon that won’t need a buildout of a delivery infrastructure to get into the hands of real customers. Watching Cali have all the fun could be step too far for some early backers…

I ordered May 2021, and I would be shocked if I get contacted before summer 2022. For all we know, Rivian is only pumping out 10 trucks a day right now. I don't think non-LE orders will be getting deliveries for a while. 2023 does seem a bit off though, and if that is the case, may end up with a F150 Lightning.

Mine was 5/13/21, so if that is true then I may be looking at other options. I will be ready for the replacement for my model 3 before 2 years from now. I don’t “need” a truck, but would like something bigger than the 3. There will be several options that will fit my needs by next year.

Sorry, I was one of those. Ordered March or April 2020, got my Model Y in June 2020.

I have chatted with CS twice and both times they stated that all LE order holders would be contacted by guides by Thanksgiving and have delivery by the end of spring 2022. I was a preorder holder of the Leaf 10 + years ago and then the Model S when it came out. In both cases the preorder panic was pretty high and then sure enough within about 9 months after production start there was virtually no backlog at all. This is not the same launch necessarily but I hazard to guess that a year from today everyone who has ordered a non-LE vehicle will have received their vehicle or at least will have been contacted by Rivian about a delivery in the near future. They are planning to IPO in the near future, they will not be bumbling around delivering 100 vehicles per week. They'll need to show a 2022 sales estimate of at least a few billion $

As it relates to service and logistics, the investment and partnership from Cox automotive should be an asset as production ramps up. I feel like there hasn't been a lot of news about what Cox is bringing to the table to help out, but it would seem like service center operations and vehicle delivery would be two big ones.

Thanks for sharing. At this point, I have given up on the CS people. 99.9% of the time they have no answer for anything I've asked. The interesting part is, we now have some answers to some of my questions from the Owners manual (super basic manual at that). Not sure if CS's are just uninformed or not allowed to answer?
