I’m guessing they redid the test on the latest software with improved regen and were able to squeak out some additional range as a result. It is also possible based on the reported drive mode improvements that some of the algorithms may have adjusted some of the power consumption curves.

Still waiting for someone that saw regen going down large declines (especially while towing) and cutting out to report if the new changes improve that or not.
Well for what it's worth I came down 4k feet or so yesterday but the regen kept being limited 'because the battery was cold' even with low regen in snow mode. First time I had seen that but the latest update said regen may be limited in cold weather. Same drive I have done a half dozen times in the last couple weeks so my first impression is not an improvement on the regen.

All the new numbers seem to indicate 150kWh available energy from the battery?

Did Rivian unlock the reserve buffer?

I don't think the battery was that big even with the reserve buffer. It's just better than 2.2 miles per Kwh.

Well, the math tells a different story... let's use the R1T w/20" AT's for example..

Rivian R1T R1S 2023 Rivian EPA Numbers published on official website 1671735898954

289mi/100 = 2.89 X 52 = 150kWh Energy

or

52kWh/100mi = .52kWh/mi
289mi range X .52 = 150 kWh energy

or..

150kWh Energy / .52kWh per mi = 289mi range

or

1mi/.52kWh per mi = 1.92mi/kWh so 150kWh energy X 1.92mi/kWh= 288mi range

It all adds up to the same thing.... Rivian is using 150kWh available to derive the new range numbers.

The EPA consumption numbers are plug to tires. The charging losses are part of the data. Drop about 10% for that. So 150kWh came out of the plug, but about 15kWh was lost before it got into usable battery charge. Battery is still the same ~135kWh usable.

Hummer is rated at 329 miles though, that article is bogus. Just because they didn't have to publish EPA numbers.. I'll be surprised if the Cybertruck comes in light enough that they do.
One could argue the Hummer achieves 329 miles of range but, since it has no EPA rating, is not rated at 329 miles. Whatever. Not going to get hung up on semantics. My point was that Rivian feels there are more gains to be had.

Are these ratings based on All Purpose mode or Conserve mode?

EPA has to either be a combination of modes that the vehicle will persist in without having to touch buttons or the display, or the least efficient one. it's why Rivian initially kicked the truck out of off-road from a single key cycle. I haven't yet seen the certification docs for the 23s.

How is that different from any manufacturer, when you have a new car?
I guess I am getting confused on all of the range discussion.

Does this:

A. imply that at some point model 2023 models will start delivering with a higher range
B. imply a software update is going to increase range for all R1 models (better efficiency, access to more pack capacity, etc)
C. Rivian following in Tesla's footsteps and learning how to game the testing better.
Yeah, I'm quite suspicious about this too. Glad it's not just me.

I’m guessing they redid the test on the latest software with improved regen and were able to squeak out some additional range as a result. It is also possible based on the reported drive mode improvements that some of the algorithms may have adjusted some of the power consumption curves.

I actually had a chance to observe it today. It still was limited, but the rate of decrease was significantly improved. Normally it will basically drop from ~60%+ regen down to near zero in what feels like a couple of seconds and you immediately notice that you are either no longer decelerating or are accelerating (on a hill). Today it never actually bottomed out.

I believe B here, the range was increased via software update, specifically in terms of higher regenerative braking performance. Check out Electrek article

Yeah I have that update. I have not seen a range bump which lead to part of my confusion. I guess time will tell.

maybe somebody answered this, but does this new range apply to our 2022 models?
