So no measurements, no questions asked, one guy eyeballing both and yep definitely doesn't work?
@wnealisr226 confirmed just yesterday with Rivian employee at the Chicago R2 Block Party event that R1 and R2 crossbars are not compatible:

"I also asked if the R1 crossbars (since they are currently on sale in the Gear Shop) would fit on the R2 and was told no, they would not." (link to his post)

From what I’ve heard it’s not the mounting points that don’t make it compatible, it’s the width of the vehicles. Even when you contract the R1 crossbars to its min, it’s still too wide to fit on the R2.

And yes previously they were saying it would be compatible. Which is odd, either nobody checked or they just assumed it would be. Either way its disappointing for any R1 owners who thought we could share between the vehicles.
Personally I think the weird part is that they can go several inches wider than needed for over the R1T Bed.

I don't see the problem. If you own an R1 and buy and R2 and want crossbars, you can afford to buy a second set. Rivian needs to make money on accessories.
Presumably the R2 crossbars are compatible with whatever (possibly rather expensive) objects you've been attaching to the top of your R1 crossbars? Agree that if you could afford an R1 you can probably afford another set of crossbars. And maybe the new ones are even an improvement in some regard?

It looks like the R1 crossbars attachment point will attach to that mount. However the R2 is about 4 inches narrower than the R1S and the R1 crossbar is too long to fit between the R2 mounting points.

Let me just get my crossbar stretcher. It's in the toolbox with my cable stretcher and left-handed screwdriver. 😉

Here's visual confirmation why R1 crossbars don't fit the R2 - the crossbar mounts are different as you can see (posted by @Hilbe)

R2 mount on the left and R1 mount on the right.

Video comparing R1T vs. R2 crossbars mount.

Don't post nonsense like this until someone with existing crossbars for an R1 attempts to mount them on an actual R2. You cannot tell from pictures whether it's compatible and there has been plenty of well-meaning but bad/false info spread by (whoever you asked that is presumably affiliated with Rivian. It would be stupid for them to make the crossbars purposefully incompatible and if that's the case, they will suffer the negative consumer reaction

That would be stupid if they're not compatible.

It will take the aftermarket community somewhere between 7 and 12 minutes to come up with an adapter if they're not compatible.
Very possible it’s another transition. The R2 is cheaper and Gen2.5 will be released to match, along with the steering wheel haptics, etc in the next year. More scaling.

Another confirmation from a test engineer at Rivian (my neighbor). As of the Rev. 2 test vehicles they have been testing, the R1 crossbars do not fit the mounting pattern and will not physically go on. They tried them, thinking they would fit and it was a no go. He has no clue why they would make them different (he tests different veh systems), but he at least verified that they wouldn't work.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

Seems like the R2 is too narrow to fit the R1 crossbars on, but I’m sure it will fit on the R3 since they’re sibling vehicles that share the same platform.

Rivian R1T R1S R1 and R2 crossbars not compatible (don't fit) - now officially confirmed by Rivian 1000008709

SHOW ME PICS OF R1 CROSSBARS ON R2 NOT FITTING.

I spent $100 on Gen2 camera and shoved it into my Gen1 plug to prove a point. Are you telling me NO ONE at these shows is driving there with R1 crossbars on and can slap them on an R2?
