I'm curious how cost conscious potential R2 owners are about optional paint cost.

If its more than $1k for LE Green that means I definitely won't do a LE and will wait for the Premium vs LE most likely.

That being said ask me again in 24 hours and my answer will probably change again.

Not a poll option, but my answer is $1,500. Anything more than that for a non custom color is a bit ridiculous.

I'd say $2,000, maybe $2500 at the most for like a green or borealis, but I wouldn't pay $2,000 for black or white--those should be standard or like $1,000.

R1 is $2,000 - $3,000.
I would expect R2 to be half that.
But I'm going to pay for the color I want, because I'm past the point of just taking whatever color is available "on the lot".

I won't vote since I'm not considering an R2 and therefore not your target audience. ( I would be more in the market for an R0 - I wish my R1 was bigger, not smaller )

But there is no limit to how much I would pay extra for the right color because I am not going to compare the cost of the unacceptably colored car to the cost of an acceptably colored one. The unacceptably colored car is just not an option.

I am going to look at the total cost of the vehicle configured how I want it and ask myself if I want to spend that much on that car. If not, I'll just shop somewhere else. The pretty Rivian isn't competing with the ugly Rivian. It is competing with the pretty Tesla/Porsche/Cadillac/Volvo/BMW/etc.

So in theory I would be fine paying $50,000 for a paint upgrade on a $50,000 car. But in practice I probably wouldn't actually do it because I am unlikely to think that the $50,000 car (with a $50,000 paint job) is compelling when compared to other $100,000 cars.

It's crazy to me how much the optional pain colors are on the R1. Hopefully its more reasonable on the R2.
Agreed. I cringed when I saw the coastal interior in the R1 Dual motor was a 4500 dollar upgrade. Add a 2500 paint upgrade, it would be hard to justify. Hoping for an "affordable" vehicle the paint is more in line with other dealerships that cost 500-1000 at most around a similar price point and free choice of interior at the top end trims.

I am thinking $500 is more like it. Why do they need to charge at all for different colors? Perhaps if they explained it to the buying public we may feel differently. If it is change over at the paint shop, then poll you reservation holders on which color they prefer and build in batches.

Rivian needs to tone it down on the wheel and paint upgrade prices. We reluctantly paid it on our R1S Tri but most R2 buyers (other than the initial enthusiasts) aren't going to pay those crazy upgrade prices.

They’ll pick a default color that keeps the paint shop running smoothly with the fewest changeovers. Silver does that and it’s popular.

Cheaper cars can't eat the extra cost of those changeovers and lower volume. Plus some colors are just more expensive to apply.
