500-800 miles from Service Center......from those with Rivian experience....how risky will this be?

They are not sending mobile service 500+ miles for any issues.....
They have mobile service techs based in areas quite a distance from service centers - thus while that mobile tech may not go 500+ miles, there could be one of these mobile techs within mobile tech service radius.

Still hard disagree here.

My truck has been in the shop every 45 days on average for the entirety of the 21 months it's been in my possession. Of those 16 or so visits, 2 have been for software, of those 2, one was because the service tech didn't follow procedure. The rest has been hardware related issues. The quality issues aren't the software. It's not bugs, or missing features, or any of that crap, it's a poorly built vehicle with marginal quality components. Suspension, body work, poorly controlled vents, electrical contactors, all physical devices that shouldn't have been an issue. I've found 4 rattles doing my own diagnostics that were simply bolts that weren't tightened down. The stories of reduced rattles from swapping from a welded subframe to a cast one are huge indicators that even the hardware was treated as "we'll fix it in service, or rev the design after launch".

Like this attachment bolt for the A/C compressor. It "jingled" when the compressor was on full blast in the summer, or after DC fast charging on road trips. This isn't a poorly released software version, this simple lack of attention to detail during assembly, and poor QC checks. A quick check that the bolts were tight and had a match mark on them would have saved a service visit (where the techs' 'couldn't find the issue'), and a pissed off customer that had to fix it himself.

At this level of vehicle, this kind of thing should embarrass the hell out of Rivian; and quite frankly, give new owners pause on if they want to deal with this 10hrs from a service center.

How pissed would you be if one of your crew left a bolt like this on a pump for a cooling tower in your data center?
The screws in the door card of my 113K-dollar R1S were loose, and a connector for the rear defroster wasn't plugged in on mine when I took delivery. And I had to fix that with 8 hours of driving and a home visit.

Incredibly risky. DON’T do it if you value your sanity/time, and enjoy having a functional vehicle.

That doesn't sound legal.
No fences were in the way enabling clear access to the frontage road. Took advantage of the situation along with several dually pickups the R1S’ maximum departure angle of 34.4 degrees made the down hill exit a piece of cake. Also, law enforcement and other first responders were otherwise occupied.

I'm not saying I wouldn't do it, but hopefully you would be respectful to law enforcement who decided to pull you over and give you a ticket. I got a ticket once for exiting prior to the exit lines. I deserved it, but it was nothing compared with what you did.

...My wife and I are retired in the mountains of southern NM about 90 miles north of El Paso..

The 2 closest service centers are Phoenix and Dallas/Austin/Houston. We are 500 miles from Phoenix...

So I thought I would ask you august and wise forum members whether you think it is worth the risk to buy a R2?...
Don't do it. Why put yourself through this when you don't have to? It would be completely self inflicted. The distance to the service centers alone are ridiculous and is a non-starter.

1) Whole new vehicle with new assemblies, parts design, suppliers and processes = infant mortality failures, quality issues and learning curve. You (and I) are an engineer and understand this. Don't fool yourself.

2) If this is a primary vehicle, what will you do in the case of emergency, given that you are very remote from cities.

If R2 is a secondary vehicle and you want it, fine, just be prepared to deal with issues.

Well, I'm guessing you don't live in NM and were not there. Also, that's big assumption that I don't respect law enforcement officers. Otherwise, enjoy the ride.

Proximity to a service center was a primary reason for bailing on a previous R1S reservation. We were in St. Aug, closest SC was in Orlando, and even that was too far for me (~2 hours).

FF to today, not only is there a SC in the St. Johns area (back in SA), but we're now in DTO (Orlando) close to 2.

Umm, rambling aside, for me, an hour or less away is my line-in-the-sand.
Update for South FL folks: I contacted the Pompano Beach Building Dept and they confirmed that they will not have an estimated date for the expected opening of the new SC until the Spring of 2027. So relief from the trek down to Miami is still a ways off. Boo-hoo!
