“Rivian has been sued over allegations that the EV maker made false claims about the autonomous driving capabilities of its R1T truck and R1S SUV models.

The class-action complaint, which was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, focuses on the first-generation models of the R1T and R1S and claims that Rivian represented that these flagship vehicles would be capable of hands-free, eyes-off driving.”

The article mentions that RJ said in 2022 Rivians would be “limited to Level 3” self driving.

Regardless of what RJ said, I dug up prior versions of Rivian.com website to see what they said about Driver+ capabilities.

https://web.archive.org/web/20220706231412/https://rivian.com/r1t

I noticed a few things:

1. “More road types introduced over time”, suggesting more road types than highways. Also, the picture depicts the driver without hands on the steering wheel, which never actually happens with Driver+.

2. Driver+ claims to deliver “true hands-free driving assistance.” Nothing about Driver+ is hands free today

3. “Lane change assist: assisted lane changes on the highway”. Currently, the driver has to do all lane changes—no driver assistance at all here.

Personally, I’m interested in seeing how this lawsuit evolves. I wouldn’t say it has no merit.

Given those materials, I would agree that the suit isn't completely meritless. But given our experience, I wouldn't say it has much merit either.

After two "Demo Drives" in late 2023/early 2024, I concluded I wouldn't want to use the then-current version of Autonomy+. Because of test drives that included highways, we were not misled at all.

I'm sure the lawyers and courts will sort it out eventually.

Best to all!

When we ordered our R1S (2021), it had 12V ports in the frunk and in the front of the cab AND dual horns...When we took delivery in August '23 we got a single pathetic horn and the only 12V port was in the back. Where is the line when they didn't deliver what I ordered? I get that it was my choice to take delivery knowing that the 12V ports weren't there - I didn't know about the horn until we needed to use it. I do understand the lawsuit - I believed that much more sophisticated Driver+ features would be coming, including hands-off. I remember that photo clearly.

Watch...us Gen1 owners will be offered lifetime a Autonomy+ subscription as part of the settlement...

The pool of people who opted out of arbitration before 30 days were up after you signed the purchase contract is not going to be that large.

If you compare Rivian to tesla. Tesla made claims in public that the cars would do ridiculous things. What they claimed on the website sounded pretty ridiculous (not as crazy as what was said in public) that the car would drive in almost all circumstances with no input from the person in the driver's seat. When you get to your destination your car will enter park seek mode and automatically park for you while you are dropped off at the front.

The difference is tesla actually delivered on this with FSD v14 and v14 lite will also have this functionality.

It sounds like nothing in 2026, but you would be very satisfied if you were given this functionality back in 2017.

Rivian made much more simple claims but they had such poor technology at the time that they can't even deliver the features available with a 2014 tesla mobileye system. I don't know how it's possible to be worse than a 7-year-old mobileye system.

They cover that in the agreement “You understand and authorize the Firm to proceed with filing your claim(s) as an
individual arbitration rather than in a court.”

Will be interesting to see how this proceeds.
