In Park City, Utah, on latest episode of The Drivecast upon being asked when the R3X is coming RJ said, “they’ll come” quickly followed by “it’s a couple of years away.” — tying its arrival directly to the Georgia factory launch.

Scaringe said, “We just haven’t announced the date. You know, it’s a couple of years away.”

The timing is largely contingent on how fast they can get the GA factory up and running. Once that is nearing completion, they should be able to firm up the timeline.

Nothing new. They've always said R3 won't happen until GA plant is up & running.
RJ seemed to be exceptionally careful about future products in this interview. I know RJ has said some small amount of non-public material information in the past during interviews, but maybe this interviewer was pushier than normal.

Understandably so and wise. Lots of things can change in the business landscape in two years. And, even from week to week; as we all witnessed since last November. It's impossible for him to say anything and not have it get twisted into "but you promised". In another thread, someone has already accused him and Rivian for having said the company would be net-positive this year because of R2—when they never said such thing.

Future R2
R4 will be the next model revealed, one of the videos from yesterday's flood of them had RJ stating that. Very curious to see what they have cooking up after R3/X!

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

In another interview a few months back RJ said best case scenario the R3X comes out at the end of 2028, around the time the Georgia Plant should be up and running (I’m looking for the interview. I think it was with MSNBC or CNBC, one of those acronyms.)

It really does hinge on how well the R2 sells and how quickly the Georgia Plant can be built. He’s purposely keeping it vague because he doesn’t want people waiting for the R3X or worse the R3, which might not come out until 2029 or later.

Since the R2 Standard doesn’t come out until Spring of 2027 at $49,490, I don’t think they’ll announce the R3X any time soon, especially if the price point is anywhere near that. They won’t want the R3X to cannibalize R2 sales this early.

Other thing that complicates the rollout of R3 is that RJ has hinted at an R2X. Could this be the tri-motor variant, or are they going to stick with a dual-motor performance as the highest trim? It would be way easier to keep making R2 variants, especially if they were selling well. It bums me out, but it makes sense.

Rivian kind of Osborne’d itself back in March of 2024. I understand that they wanted to show the public that they aren’t just making a smaller more affordable R1 with the R2, but the R3 really stole the show. My username isn’t Gen(R3)Xer for nothing. 😉

You know, this has been the consistent position from Rivian for so long that I'm surprised there is anyone alive who thinks otherwise. Certainly not news ...

As the CEO of a pubicly traded company he should refrain from making forward looking statements about things that may or may not happen. He is being a responsible CEO.

I'd expect R3 to be offset from a mid-lifecycle refresh of R2. If R2 is a 2027 model that implies a late 2028/early 2029 launch date for R3 before the R2 refresh around 2030.

As for an R4, who knows? Rivian needs to get profitable with R2 or R3/R4 never happen and Rivian ends up like Fisker.

Luckily Rivian is already better off than Fisker is.... errr, was.
