R1T Tailgate Trim Replacement

Anyone have R1T tailgate trim replacement that wasn't covered under warranty even though it was under the warranty miles? If so, what was Rivian's justification for not covering it, and how much did it cost out of pocket?

FWIW, I recently purchased a 2022 R1T w/ 15k miles on it and lost the tailgate trim when I was driving w/ the tailgate down. I noticed it was loose weeks before but didn't get around to gluing it yet, and I have no idea what the previous owner did to it, and have no idea if it was replaced before under the 2022 R1T recall, since you don't get access to the previous owners service history.

Regardless, I'm hoping that Rivian still covers it under warranty, since i definitely did NOT do anything to damage it myself.

Thanks for the info. I'm scheduled for a mobile service appointment in a week but they haven't produced an invoice yet.

Fingers-crossed though that they'll cover it. Also, sent picture of the passenger side trim on the bed which is loose too.

I had the loose trim piece also but I fixed it by taking off the trim piece, taking out the four bolts that hold down the back of the tailgate, drilling small pilot holes in the trim piece, then using those same four bolts to hold down both pieces instead of just one and now it doesn’t move at all.

Out of warranty replacement cost for me was $273.68 last October.

@Steve A. Do not dare let them charge you $50 for popping the trim in. That's absurd! Just tell them you need the parts only. It's incredibly easy; pull tape cover off, push it in at all the clip points.

Mine broke off last winter (2024-2025). It was kinda my fault but they gave me a new one and put it on under warranty. It is all in how you explain what happened. Just be nice, explain it, hopefully you will be fine.

Dude. Once again, you guys are THE BEST! I've already got the mobile appointment set up for Monday 5/11 while I'm at work so couldn't get more convenient than that. I'm giving them the benefit of doubt that they will replace it under warranty since it still only has 18k miles on it and they did have a 2022 R1T recall on the design.

I'm just kicking myself since I saw that it was loose and didn't get around to hitting it with some Gorilla glue. SMH

Regardless, I'm loving my 2022 R1T even more than my 2023 R1S that I totalled, and I tell EVERYONE that asks about it that the BEST deal is at Lindsay VW Dulles!

I reattached mine using multiple strips of VHB tape and it's never been a problem again.

Rivian is no longer covering these under warranty even though it’s a known design flaw. I just had mine replaced and I lost my argument with them about charging me for it.

It is a poor design. I have the same issue with my Ford F150, so this isn't unique to Rivian. I think it has to do with having a design person who is all about form but doesn't have a clue about function. As a designer, if you never get your hands dirty and sit at a keyboard all day you are bound to design trim that looks pretty but will be pulled off or destroyed the first time anything is dragged out of the bed of the truck. BTW, Ford won't cover their lousy design under warranty either!
