R1 and R2 crossbars not compatible (don't fit) - now officially confirmed by Rivian

UPDATE 5/4/26

Rivian officially confirmed today that "the cargo crossbars are not interchangeable between R1 and R2."

Here's visual confirmation why R1 crossbars don't fit the R2 - the crossbar mounts are different as you can see (posted by @Hilbe)

R2 mount on the left and R1 mount on the right.


@wnealisr226 also confirmed with Rivian employee at the Chicago R2 Block Party event that R1 and R2 crossbars are not compatible:

Further confirmation from @Killer95Stang:

"Another confirmation from a test engineer at Rivian (my neighbor). As of the Rev. 2 test vehicles they have been testing, the R1 crossbars do not fit the mounting pattern and will not physically go on. They tried them, thinking they would fit and it was a no go. He has no clue why they would make them different (he tests different veh systems), but he at least verified that they wouldn't work." (link to his post)​

That would be stupid if they're not compatible.

It will take the aftermarket community somewhere between 7 and 12 minutes to come up with an adapter if they're not compatible.

Anyway, the R2 mount doesn't specifically appear incompatible. I think it's impossible to say from the photo.

Looking at my crossbars, it looks to me like they would be compatible. I think my mount point on my R1S is flusher than what is shown on that R1T.

There was a comment in another thread where at one of the viewing events Rivian was asked and they said not compatible. I had thought back in March 2024 unveiling that they said they would be (maybe I misremembered).

Oddly, I don’t like the top hat look on the Rivian crossbars, much prefer the streamlined look like this - but can you get decent quality on Amazon?

I bought a set of these from amazon. So far they have been great. I only need them when I take my SUP somewhere. I have the Thule Evo on the bed. They are pretty noisy and take about 15 to 20 minutes to put on or take off. Pretty simple mount ing design, a u-bolt is basically it. NO t bad for $159

All I know is the mounting surface on the bars is physically different (which is an obvious fact from these photos), but I haven't heard anything about compatibility in either direction.

From what I’ve heard it’s not the mounting points that don’t make it compatible, it’s the width of the vehicles. Even when you contract the R1 crossbars to its min, it’s still too wide to fit on the R2.

And yes previously they were saying it would be compatible. Which is odd, either nobody checked or they just assumed it would be. Either way its disappointing for any R1 owners who thought we could share between the vehicles.
