They can't be that good without the LIDAR. I can't imagine it would be top spec.
It sounds to me like it's going to be everything in the later R2s, with the exception of the gen3 AXM and the Lidar unit. But Rivian isn't being explicit about it yet. We're still months away, service techs haven't been trained yet.

I have no interest in the auto drive features, plus I don't like the sensor look in the photos out now. R2 without lidar is fine for me.

Random 2 cents., I find it funny how many people talk about buying a product but then come up with reasons not to buy because in the future the product will get better....

if it drives well and price is not out of line then I will pick up an R2. For me the desired target is less than 60k price. Dual motor or Tri motor, 300+ miles range and sub 4 second 0-60 time. A nice sound system would also be needed. Also if then R2 takes to long, I will cross shop with the BMW iX3 new class. if they keep the price in line.

I agree with you partly on this, but when they’ve already said by the end of 2026 it will have LiDar, why would I buy one that doesn’t have it just a few months before it does?

I’m in a Gen 1 R1S so I’d like our R2 to at least have the latest tech. It’s not like 2 years, it’s a few months.

Assuming I still want the vehicle once it is released etc (I DO have a reservation), I'll get whatever model is being sold at the time. I have no idea how long it will take for my number to come up and, realistically, I'm in an R1S lease until October 27 anyway.

If you think Gen 3 is great and worth waiting for... just wait until you see Gen 4!

I question if this is to throw people off the timeline for release. It makes little sense to build an obsolete unit for a few months to get an earlier delivery window. I would prefer a Tri-motor so latest rumor is I have to wait anyway, but would image value of gen 2 R2 would be considerably lower than G3 R2

G3 R1T Tri motor with lockers, better audio, and a roof that darkens like the windows on a Boeing 787 has my signature in a check made out to Rivian

I waited for Gen2 (2025) to get the latest and greatest hardware. If they can’t provide L3 in R1 Gen2 because of lack of LiDAR, and it’s only available on Gen3 (2026), I will be sad. 1 year between generations in HW that blocks a major feature feels like a fail, especially if they move the R1 to Gen3 (speculative) in the next year.

So it appears that the first production batch of R2s will have gen 2 hardware and sensors. Later around the end of 2026 the gen 3 hardware (including LiDAR) will ship on all R2s and the gen 2 hardware R2 will be discontinued. There will not be an upgrade available to convert gen 2 to gen 3.
My question is, if you have a reservation for an R2, will you take the early gen 2 R2 or wait 6-9 months for the gen 3 R2?

The price is not going to stay the same ….things are going to get interesting when pricing is announced…

I had expected an early Q2 release so configurator out in January (maybe just before Q4 results to help distract from the financials). Then we get a better picture of specs and cost.

I’m not sure honestly, I want one ASAP, but it seems like a pretty big upgrade to me if I wait. I think it’s going to be a game time call, and knowing me I’ll probably get FOMO and buy the G2 version.

I just want a "bum-basic" R2. If that's what's on offer at first then I'll take it. Waiting for the latest tech is a never ending game.
