I think that the 100kwh estimates are reverse engineered based off anticipated efficiency and Rivian's range promises.

Over 300 miles of range / 3.0-3.5 mi/kwh = 100ish kwh battery.
All guesses, but I don't see how they can hit their price target with a battery much larger than 100KWh. Latest model Y hits 3.5 miles/KWh at 70mph. R2S won't be as efficient, so I would expect highway range around 300.

Shorter charging sessions more closely mirrors the ICE experience. 300-400 miles is the average range between fill ups for a compact SUV so people are already attuned to stopping every 300 or so miles. The differentiator is that it takes about 3-5 minutes to fill up a gas tank but around 30 minutes of charging (in an R1) to get from 20-80.

I don't mind stopping every 3 hours to charge, its better for your health anyways. I'd just like for those charging stops to more closely mirror a gas stop than they do now.
Except no BEV gets 300-400 miles of highway range between refueling stops, especially in the winter.

As you know, highway speeds cut EPA range by 20%. And s 10% to 80% DCFC is only 70% of the battery. So even in the summer, a 400-mile EPA range vehicle only gets 0.7*0.8*400 = 224 miles of range between refueling stops. That is not what ICEVs drivers experience, even if the charging time is improved. (And in bad weather, you can drop that range by another 20%.)

The big advantage of driving a BEV is home and destination charging. You can't do that in a ICEV. Longer range means you are more likely to be able to skip that DCFC, and just charge when you get home, or when you get to your destination.

Faster DCF charging is good, no DCF charging is better. IMO!

224 miles of hwy range is close to 3 hours of driving, which is fine with my bladder. Plus I get more on the first leg by starting at nearly 100% SoC. On our R1S max pack, we can do bay area to Tahoe (200 miles with a 7200' climb) without stopping and plenty of buffer. That's nice.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
More disappointed they won't bring out configurations and pricing until 2026.
Yeah, why not get people hyped up before the end of the year? Of course if the vehicle doesn’t release until the end of Q2, say July, then maybe it would lose momentum/interest.

I wonder if the lineup will be something like this:

Single motor FWD/RWD standard battery - $45K
Dual motor AWD standard battery - $55K (software unlockable performance)
Dual motor performance AWD standard battery - $60K
Tri-Motor performance AWD extended battery - $70K

Optional software upgrade standard AWD -> performance AWD - $5K
Standard -> Extended battery upgrade - $5K
Optional sound & vision package - $2K
Optional all-terrain package - $3K

Perhaps have a launch edition with sound & vision standard at no cost.
Don't forget 3k for a paint upgrade and 1k for black wheels. DAMHIK.

Faster charging and at least 350 miles of range please. I’m assuming no max pack option?

They made that mistake with the R1 and ended up with pricegate - increasing the price on reservation holders, and then rolling back the decision because people were canceling. I think it’s the right call to wait on pricing until they are much closer to actual production and deliveries when they are certain of their costs.
Pay the man!

The jump between the single motor and dual seems like a lot. I'd imagine closer to $50k-ish for the dual before options to closer align with the Model Y (clearly their target). I'd imagine the price on the higher trims being a bit cheaper, as I doubt they'll want to put the R2 in R1 territory, specially before paint and other options.

All conjecture though. Is anyone's guess at the moment. I doubt even Rivian has the pricing figured out at this point.

All the details and launch date will be here in a blink of an eye, patience...seems like last week I was celebrating the new year of 2025, time flies when you're having fun!

CONFIRMED TODAY ON EARNINGS CALL:

- First R2 deliveries on track for first half 2026

- First R2 trim will be Dual Motor AWD

- Launch Edition (which will be Dual Motor AWD) will be produced and delivered first

- Launch Edition won't be the most-expensive trim level

According to RJ the R2 Launch Edition is "well-appointed, but it's not intended to be our most expensive version. It is intended to be a very nicely set-up vehicle, which we think will make the most people the most happy."

- Rivian will host an R2 event in early 2026 where outline pricing, powertrains, trims, configurations, and available options will be revealed

Also on today's Q3 2025 earnings call, RJ said

"I've been driving an R2 for a while now, and it is incredible. From performance perspective, it delivers on the adventurous spirit customers expect from Rivian while also being a great daily driver that will fit so many different use cases for our customers."
I was excited about this but love my R1T so much that I will probably wait for the 3 motor variant of the R2 to trade into, or keep my R1T and add an R3x when we get there!

Agreed it's all conjecture at this pint and we'll see soon enough. As posted, they'd risk pricing themselves right out of business. This is the "big moment" for Rivian and they need numbers more than anything. They know the Tesla MY is the direct competition so pricing needs to be aggressive.

I think the Jeep Recon will start around $60K at launch so I wouldn't be too surprised to see similar pricing on the R2. I wonder if the Jeep will be launched at the LA Auto Show since it's supposed to go on sale before the end of 2025.

Looks to be an interesting alternative to R2, but Stellantis isn't exactly knocking them out of the park lately....
