I bought a new phone (fresh install too, so nothing to transfer) and just downloaded the Rivian app, signed into my account, and paired my phone when I got into the truck...

Zero problems, you don't need the old phone and don't need to restore from a backup (most people probably do though)

I thought that if the card was left in the vehicle, it would not lock.

Keycards are NFC (Near Field Communication). That tech does not have the range. The car can only detect and know presence of card when card is held at locations shown on the card itself.

Gen 1: driver door handle (exterior), just above driver door latch (interior)

Thanks guys. I've never used the key card other than when I've had to valet the vehicle (I hate this but there has been places where valet is the only parking option). So at least I know the card works. I carry two credit cards and two auto keycards (Rivian and Tesla) just in case. I hate thick wallets.

I just got a new phone, and the transfer didn't keep my bluetooth connections for some reason. So no PaaK for the Rivian. I did my transfer at home, so no big deal. But when I went to turn in my trade-in phone, I saw several people doing their transfers in the T-Mobile store.

So...if you do that, and you used PaaK to drive there...well, you're not getting home.

I never rely solely on my phone. Fob goes everywhere I do. Didn't even think about PAK when I wiped and traded in my phone at the Apple store. I set up my new phone an hour later when I got home.

Add that to the list of reasons a fob is useful.

There's been couple of times that we could not lock our vehicle at a trail and it turned out that my wife left her phone in the her purse locked in the frunk. Thought it would apply to the key card too but not??

As for the watch as a backup, it requires one to have an AppleWatch AND gen 2. For those of us with gen 1, this is not an option...planned obsolescence.

You can lock phone, fob, or keycard in the vehicle - you just have to manually lock it with a phone or the fob. It will not automatically lock if the phone or fob is in the vehicle. I do it all the time - did it trail running yesterday. Took my fob and locked the phone in the vehicle.

Yeah, I thought everyone carried a card as backup. Probably not for the explicit case of swapping your phone, but in case the battery on your phone dies.

I figure, if my phone goes out, I can always smash a window on the truck and hotwire it. That should work, right?

What exactly is the correct procedure for switching to a new iPhone? Is it like...

1. Back up old phone, set up new phone with that backup
2. Delete old phone from vehicle keys
3. Open Rivian app on new phone and add/assign the new phone as a key?

For 1. you can do that or you can set up using the old phone directly if you're trading in remotely (or not trading in). If you're trading in at the store then you have to do the back up method, or set it up in store (which the Apple store is pure chaos right now, so not really where I wanted to hang out).

For 3. important to note you must be inside the vehicle to set up a new PAAK.

For 2. they just recently changed it where I was required to call Rivian to remove the old key. Not sure timing matters though. (Last time I deleted a key you could do it from the center screen, but I couldn't this time).

Do you carry key card? Your Apple Watch with WAAK app will also let you drive it.

A little off topic but I have the WAAK app. Was it a one time payment or is there a monthly charge for it? I don't see it as a subscription on my iPhone.

For those of you who lock your PaaK in the truck, are you not worried about how someone who gets in can just drive off? I had to leave my phone in the truck a few days ago and I turned it off before locking the truck. I guess if the phone is locked and you use two factor start it is safe.
