Curious about the Comma 3X and Openpilot? You can also check out my video about the recent version 0.9.9 update and the current state of Openpilot on the Rivian then get yours during the 4th of July sale for $799!

I'm so tempted to buy the whole setup if you're free one weekend to help me tackle this project.

Just like others, I am worried about the harness / setup and would appreciate having someone who has experience to help / guide. The video makes it look a lot less intimidating.

I am very familiar with car audio / remote start systems as a college job and building mining rigs / gaming PC as a hobby but I would still prefer an expert who has knowledge on Rivian comma 3X while I try to tackle this.

Thanks for your help.

Done. I just put an order in for comma and the harness.

off topic - I hope you're enjoying the sunshade we tested. I have some upgrades on order to help both of us with keeping the sunshade stable at 80 mph with all the windows down.

In my opinion, if you’ve done car stereo in the past, as I have, this is not that difficult. You can do it! I’ve logged over 3,000 miles with my comma and it’s great. It’s what I hoped the driver assistance would be when I purchased the vehicle. Next closest that I would compare it to, that I’ve tried, is Tesla FSD. To be clear though, this will not stop at red lights, stop signs, navigate, or have the ability to turn the steering wheel more than 90 degrees.

:)

Thanks for everything you do for the Rivian community locally and at large.

I look forward to finally doing some much needed interior mods like comma, radar detector and Adventure MagSafe wireless charger.

This sale and your assistance was the final push I needed.

Thanks!

Exceeding expectations: I installed a Comma 3X in my '23 R1S quad 6 weeks ago and have logged about 2000 miles with Comma providing "lane centering." I have the standard harness that Comma sells.

After retiring from farming at the end of 2024 and moving to Bloomington, I've been driving a 120-mile round trip back to the farm 2 or 3 times a week. The roads on my commute are flat, straight rural roads ... mainly oil and chip plus a few miles of 2-lane asphalt.

In my experience, the Comma does a very competent job of steering in the 3 scenarios I encounter: (1) 2-lane road with a center line AND edge lines, (2) 2-lane road with only a center line, and (3) rural road with no painted lines whatsoever. Obviously, Comma detects painted highway lane markings (lines). It also detects the boundary between pavement (or gravel) and grass where the road ditch begins (appears in real time as an orange line on the Comma display). Detecting the gravel/grass boundary allows Comma to steer remarkably well on rural roads that have no lane markings.

Comma's steering assist does NOT disengage when I tug on the steering wheel or manually steer to avoid a pothole. And I like that.

I COULD drive for miles without touching the steering wheel, but I drive with at least one hand on the wheel 99+% of the time.

Comma has a driver-facing camera that constantly monitors the driver while lane centering is engaged. If it detects that you're not facing forward (ie, paying attention to the road ahead), it will softly "beep" after only a few seconds of inattention.

For my use case, the Comma 3X does exactly what I wanted and expected.

I'd wager that Driver+ doesn't even work on a lot of those roads, also!

Yep. Driver+ is available on 0% of the roads I regularly drive. Comma 3X works on 100% of the roads I regularly drive.

Gerald is awesome. He helped me installed the unit. Although, it didn't work out, but greatly appreciated his efforts. I might venture back to it at another time. Still have the magnetic mount.

Apologies in advance if this should already be self evident, but is the added value of this less for a Gen 2 (May 2025 build) R1S?

It adds zero value, because it isn't compatible.

@gerrylum will know better than I on the progress, but they have been trying to recruit a couple of Gen 2 owners to try to get it going.
